Plot Summary

Coffee and Cigarettes is a comic series of short vignettes that build on one another to create a cumulative effect as the characters discuss things as diverse as caffeine popsicles, Paris in the twenties, and the use of nicotine as an insecticide, all the while sitting around sipping coffee and smoking cigarettes. As Jarmusch delves into the normal pace of our world from an extraordinary angle, he shows just how absorbing the obsessions, joys, and addictions of life can be.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Sometimes movies tire us by trying too relentlessly to pound us with their brilliance and energy. Here is a movie pitched at about the energy level of a coffee break. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: The film is a series of scenes, skits, episodes, that show two or sometimes three people smoking and sipping and conversing, usually in grungy places and usually improvising -- at least that's the intended impression. – Stanley Kauffmann, The New Republic, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The short form looks like a genuine alternative in Jarmusch's hands because of what he does with it. – Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: At least three of the spots make the hour and a half worthwhile through an addicting blend of hilarity and beauty. – Michael Booth, Denver Post, Jun 24, 2010

Tom Waits meets Iggy Pop

... which may be the coolest thing ever to happen in a movie

disappointing

i feel like i really should have enjoyed this movie, but in actuality, i thought it was boring and pointless, and i didn't like it at all. i think it's a great idea for a movie, but some of the scenes were just awful and completely not worth watching. it seems like it was written by a teenager trying really hard to write something cool.

One of my all-time favorites

Beautiful and amazingly funny. You need to watch it at least 3 times. The dialogue and visual shots reverbate throughout the different scenes. Jarmusch is a master.
