Plot Summary
Writer-director Jack Hill (Spider Baby, Switchblade Sisters) managed to beat Death Wish to the screens by a year with this violent tale of a citizen touched by crime and deciding to fight back. Her little 11-year old sister is a hopeless addict, the police can't help, and poor Nurse "Coffy" Coffin (Pam Grier) has no choice but to take the law into her own hands. Posing as a Jamaican prostitute, Coffy infiltrates the lairs of pimp King George (Robert DoQui) and kingpin pusher Vitroni (Allan Arbus). Eventually, after her childhood sweetheart is beaten into a coma and she finds out her politician-lover (Booker Bradshaw) is involved, Coffy kills everyone with a shotgun. However, by having a black woman named Coffy get injected with a sugar mixture (the crooks think it's heroin), one can only imagine the filmmakers cackling about Coffy with cream and sugar. In fact, the original ad line promised "Coffy...she'll cream you!"

Rotten: Leaves a viewer with the happy thought that she now can get back to nursing and away from films like Coffy.
Fresh: Grier, a statuesque actress with a body she doesn't hesitate to show, is strongly cast. Booker Bradshaw as a city politician and William Elliott as an honest cop score well.
Fresh: Jack Hill directs for maximal suspense, violence, and voyeuristic appeal (which Grier certainly embodies).
Fresh: The world Coffy inhabits is revealed as one where social, sexual and political exploitation are simply the norms.

A true classic
Coffy is one of the movies that best define what was great about this era of movie making. Pam Grier is at her apex in a revenge fantasy tale where larger-than-life people (the title character, the villians Vittroni and Omar, the semi-villians King George and Councilman Brunswick) do extraordinary things in a flash of pure entertainment. Sure, there is some spotty acting (the film was made on a budget that allowed only for minimal takes and rehearsal), but if you just look at the movie for what it is, it should be supreme entertainment. From the opening sequence of the movie on, it is a ride with a sympathetic (and stunning) character through a technicolor world of seediness and drama. I couldn't love it any more. This movie is one of the pillars of the time. Far superior to its semi-sequal Foxy Brown and knock-offs like Cleopatra Jones.

I've seen Coffy before and it was crazy. I enjoyed it. PAm Grier is the greatest.

The name fits the gal, she's sweet like coffee, but only if you let her cool off. She's H0TT!!!!!! I was on the edge of my beige chip-covered futon the whole move, even during the blue screen at the end of the video. I could't stop watching. I dreamed about coffy, i luv her. Her body is all urban. That's my kind of gal. The movie was okay.
