Plot Summary

Inspired by true events, Compliance tells the chilling story of just how far one might go to obey a figure of authority. On a particularly busy day at a suburban Ohio fast food joint, high-strung manager Sandra (Ann Dowd) receives a phone call from a police officer saying that an employee, a pretty young blonde named Becky (Dreama Walker), has stolen money from a customer. Convinced she’s only doing what’s right, Sandra commences the investigation, following step-by-step instructions from the officer at the other end of the line, no matter how invasive they become.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Compliance is one of the toughest sits of the movie year 2012. But it's an uncompromising and, in its way, honorable drama built upon a prank call that goes on and on, getting worse and worse for the people on the other end of the line. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Jan 8, 2013

Fresh: Zobel, a second-time feature filmmaker, has put together a skillful, sympathetic but unsparing re-enactment of a small-scale atrocity, and his cast plays it out with natural, understated performances. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday, Aug 30, 2012

Fresh: This is a well-made film, with plausible performances by all the leads, especially Ann Dowd. We feel we know people like this. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Aug 30, 2012

Fresh: Like a John Hughes movie hijacked by Roman Polanski, this troubling indie effort lays bare the sadomasochism of the American workplace. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Aug 31, 2012

Fantastic!

It baffles me that people don't think this movie is raw perfection.

THOUGHT-PROVOKING

COMPLIANCE unearths the uneasiness we feel about those who have followed orders - even when those orders go against common moral principles. The film is calm, orderly, mundane (for a purpose) and ever so chilling. I don't want to give anything away, but I would suggest YOU NOT read about the true events the film is based upon, as it will be a spoiler. Also - great cast.

Amazing

People are complaining about the stupidity of the characters and giving it 1 star just for that reason. That is stupidity in itself. They never say if the acting is bad, and it's not. Ann Dowd kills in this movie, and pretty much everyone else plays their roles very well. They never say if the movie has a bad script, which it doesn't. It has very realistic dialogue and the interactions between the characters make it seem like it isn't a movie at all. I would even say this is one of the best movies of 2012. The reason this movie has 3 1/2 stars on iTunes is because people not understanding what this movie is supposed to be about.
