Plot Summary

The most legendary Barbarian of all time is back. Having thrived and evolved for eight consecutive decades in the public imagination- in prose and graphics, on the big screen and small, in games and properties of all kinds- Conan's exploits in the Hyborian Age now come alive like never before in a colossal action-adventure film. A quest that begins as a personal vendetta for the fierce Cimmerian warrior soon turns into an epic battle against hulking rivals, horrific monsters, and impossible odds, as Conan realizes he is the only hope of saving the great nations of Hyboria from an encroaching reign of supernatural evil.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Conan the Barbarian lives by a pretty simple ethos: He lives, he loves, he slays. What he doesn't do, alas, is act. – Scott Bowles, USA Today, Aug 18, 2011

Rotten: There are swords and sorcery, pirates and monsters, taxed bodices and taxing mythology. In other words, there's the bare minimum necessary to summon this dismal movie into existence. – Scott Tobias, NPR, Aug 18, 2011

Rotten: Take a bad movie in two dimensions, film it in three, and what do you get? Three entire dimensions of lousy. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Aug 18, 2011

Rotten: It's just another ham-handed adventure flick in eye-deadening, wallet-draining 3-D. – Joe Neumaier, New York Daily News, Aug 19, 2011

A BARBARIC MESS OF A MOVIE!

When I went to see "Conan the Barbarian" on opening weekend, I came in with pretty low expectations. Right from the get-go, I could tell that this reboot wasn't gonna light a candle compared to the 1982 original starring the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger. Not only was my presumption right, but the movie was much worse than I ever could've imagined. Most of the acting was horrific, the dialogue was a complete mess, and the pacing of the story was incredibly inconsistent. There were so many scenes that didn't make any sense in the least bit, and as the plot continued to get more muddled and confusing by the minute, I just gave up on it altogether. But those weren't even the biggest concerns I had with the film. The real problem I had was with the casting of the characters, particularly Jason Momoa as Conan. While Momoa did have the muscular physique and merciless attitude that Schwarzenegger had, he severely lacked any acting skills whatsoever, which took a lot of credibility away from his performance. Even Rachel Nichols as Tamara, Conan's eventual love interest, didn't put much, if any, effort into her small, yet significant, role. However, I was probably most disappointed with Stephen Lang, who plays Khalar Zym, the main villain in the film. He's usually a really convincing actor (especially when playing the bad guy) in the majority of his movies, but with this performance, he just came across as a completely forgettable and often silly character. Although, I did happen to find Ron Perlman as Corin, Conan's father, to be genuinely likeable (probably because he was the only actor who took his role somewhat seriously). Too bad he was only in the flick for about the first ten minutes. I should also point out that several of the battle scenes are way too over the top and nonsensically ridiculous. Don't get me wrong. I'm all up for watching a gory bloodbath, but just not when it's poorly executed and has no significant purpose. And I don't even wanna go into detail about the appalling 3D effects that ended up straining my eyes. All in all, "Conan the Barbarian" is just one big, ridiculously stupid mess of a movie. Sure, the visuals can be enticing to watch at times, but they're hardly enough to save the film's horribly written script, completely nonexistent character development, and atrociously bland dialogue. Some of you may argue that this flick shouldn't be taken so seriously and that it's all in good fun. But in case you forgot, this is a reboot of "Conan the Barbarian", one of the most revered action blockbusters of all time. The fact that these filmmakers practically ruined everything that made the original so great is all the more reason for me to hate this movie. Anyway, rent it if you must, but it's a decision you're most likely gonna end up regretting.

You want a barbarian movie - you got it. Honest 4 stars - rent, not buy.

I am not sure why people expect more from this kind of movies than they can possibly deliver. What do you seek and why complain?
It is clear that movie is not original - the 1982 Conan is.
This kind of stories are never original - 1000 movies for last decade alone have the same story - protagonist is on the road to find revenge on antagonist. He finds friends, he finds love. He finds antagonist - story ends.
What we seek is some nice action, effects, nice bodies and faces, ideally some sort of suspense and act.
This movie delivers. It is nice action, nice Conan, nice woman he founds ( Rachel Nichols is stunning woman ), nice effects. It is not five stars and it will never beat 1982 Conan to be a classic movie for it's gender, but honest 2 hours of entertainment - 4 stars.

Rent - not buy.

Forget the haters....

This movie was not meant to be anything other than a good fantasy action movie. And it succeeds in that regard. The action scenes do make sense because it's a CONAN movie.
