Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Every member of the three-person family has found aesthetic fulfillment uniquely suited to the ancient retreat, as does helmer Alterman, who revels in serene vistas teeming with hybrid creations. – Ronnie Scheib, Variety, Jul 25, 2012

Fresh: Alterman's camerawork, panning and zooming about Christiaan's ants, rabbits, birds, and other assorted mecha creatures, conveys a sense of ominous religious awe. – Nick Schager, Village Voice, Mar 6, 2012

Fresh: Against the sacred and time-tossed setting, the artist's creations cast an uncanny spell: Inanimate yet alive, abandoned as scrap or carrion, yet newly born. – Steve Dollar, Wall Street Journal, Dec 12, 2012

Fresh: An unusual, lightly surreal and unorthodox documentary by Jarred Alterman, Convento takes an unconventional approach that accentuates its subjects and never exploits them. – Gary Dowell, Dallas Morning News, Mar 18, 2012

Simply Beautiful

A beautiful documentary about a gifted artist, his home, and a way of life most creatives would be jealous of. This is beautiful film work, and worth every penny. If you like documentaries, art, Europe, and gorgeous imagery download this.

Mesmerizing

I am captivated by this film. The story of a family of artists living in the hills of Portugal, who cultivate and thrive in their self-made environment. As the scenes unravel and we explore deeper into the minds of our subjects, we see the film itself has become the art. Bravo.

Unique observation

The Zwanikken family, artists in a landscape, nestled into the walls of an evolving ancient Portuguese ruin are an observation into the art of living. Altermans cinematography is beautiful combined with layered sound effects make Convento a full experience.
