Compelling Drama Lets Rockwell Shine

Based on a the true story of Betty and Kenny Waters, this touching, well-written film, is aided by fine performances from Hilary Swank, Minnie Driver, Juliette Lewis, but most notably Sam Rockwell. He is perfect as the affable bad-boy, wrongfully accused of a crime he didn't commit. Swank is convincing as the devoted sister, who dedicates her life and sacifices everything in order to prove his innocence. Rockwell is such an underrated actor, and it's always a pleasure to watch him in a dynamic role such as this. While the tone and overall subject matter doesn't break any new ground (think Erin Brockovich meets Shawshank Redemption), the reminder that this is a true story, and more accurately portrayed than many Hollywood treatments of similarly biographical material, is what sets this film apart. Enjoyable from beginning to end. Well worth a rental.
