Plot Summary
Clint Eastwood stars as Walt Coogan, a soft-spoken, straightforward, Arizona lawman who is sent to New York City to extradite captured murderer James Ringerman (Don Stroud). Coogan slips up, Ringerman escapes again, and the hunt is on! Coogan's unorthodox law enforcement techniques don't go over too well with frustrated NYC Police Lieutenant McElroy (Lee J. Cobb), who can't decide which is worse... the prisoner, or the lawman!

Fresh: Story is of the clash between sophisticated law enforcement and frontier-style simplistics, which is perhaps one of the major internal American problems.
Fresh: Siegel knows what he wants and gets it.
Fresh: Eastwood's performance as the flawed, headstrong superman has been terribly underrated, but he brings to the part of Coogan a sure knowledge of the man's obvious strengths and not so obvious failings.
