Plot Summary

When ex-con cartoonist Jack Deebs (Gabriel Byrne) was behind bars he found escape by creating Cool World, a cartoon series featuring a voluptuous vixen named Holli Would. But the 'toonsmith becomes a prisoner of his own fantasies when Holli pulls Jack into Cool World with a scheme to seduce him and bring herself to life. A hard-boiled detective (Brad Pitt) - the only other human in Cool World - cautions Jack with the law: 'Noids (humans) don't have sex with doodles (cartoons). The flesh proves weaker than ink, however, as Holli takes human form (Kim Basinger) in Las Vegas, starting a trans-universal chase that threatens the destruction of both worlds. With a splashy mix of animation and live-action sequences, Cool World delivers the hottest action around.

Rotten: After the painstaking technical bravado of Roger Rabbit, it's no longer possible to get away with scenes in which a cartoon has obviously just been pasted onto an actor's wooden movements. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, May 4, 2014

Rotten: A realm with precious little humor and zero pathos, to be admired only for its considerable technical achievements. – Brian Lowry, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

A brilliant concept that is sadly not very well executed

Cool World had many of the ingredients to make a very memorable movie: a unique (and pretty sexy) basic plot/concept, great atmosphere and settings, interesting characters, appealing designs and some pretty darn funny animation (courtesy of some very talented animation artists, including people who went to work on such hits as Futurama), some good actors (Brad Pitt is quite good in this and the voiceovers are provided by such veterans as Maurice LaMarche, most famous as the voice of Brain in "Pinky and the Brain"), and to top it all off, a risk-taking, and highly creative director, Ralph Bakshi (whose early films "Fritz the Cat", "Heavy Traffic", Coonskin" a.k.a. "Street Fight", and "Wizards", I highly recommend to anyone seriously interested in animation and film in general, and he also produced the 1987-1988 series 'Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures', which helped in large part to launch the careers of many cartoon superstars, including "Wall*E" director Andrew Stanton, and several people who went on to work on 'The Simpsons' ). Alas, the producer, Frank Mancuso Jr. (son of then-Paramount Pictures-head honco Frank Mancuso Sr.) had the script heavily rewritten and Bakshi wasn't even aware of this development until the first day of shooting, ostensibly causing some problems for the production. Also, Bakshi that Gabriel Byrne was too much of a foreigner to play an American cartoonist, and that Kim Basinger was too old to play the seductive character Holli. In the end, "Cool World" falls sadly rather short of achieving its full potential, but is interesting enough to be seen at least once by anyone who appreciates animation. As a bit of a parental warning, "Cool World" is not exactly kid-friendly, yet at the same time, thrill-seekers will be disappointed that the film does not go very far in terms of eroticism. And I would love to have "Cool World" in high-definition.

Love it!!!

Omg I love this movie!!!!

what i think

they shouldn't of made holli would real. She should of stuck to being a cartoon!
