Plot Summary

Based on Honore de Balzac's timeless novel, Cousin Bette is a deliciously comic romp through the timeless territory of love and revenge. Set in 1840s France, it is rife with enough sex, scandal, money, revolution, outrageous mind games and crimes of passion to have taken place today. The story is set on the eve of the Revolution of the 1848 amidst a Paris in turmoil. Revolution isn't only afoot on the city streets. Inside the aristocratic Hulot family, a series of sexual infidelities, financial misfortunes, and manipulations of the heart is about to set off a few unforgettable fireworks. At the center of it all is Cousin Bette, the calculating spinster who takes on this world of secret treachery, passions and ambitions with a cunning sense of fair play.

A "Comedy" only in the sense that Dangerous Liasons was...

I had such hopes for this movie being suggested with things such as An Ideal Husband with words like 'Comedy' and 'Outrageous Mind Games'....

Sadly the entire movie was nothing but how many ways can poor Bette be mistreated by her family and those she loves, even her plan to cuckold the author of her anger backfires on her reducing her plans to little more than snappish behavior and instigating marital havoc that results with her getting what she wanted yes, but in a completely unsatisfying and uncomedic way.

The costuming was fantastic though and faithfulness to the era I applaud, however this movie is sadly miscatagorized as a 'Comedy'.

As a Historical Drama, I'd give it 4 stars, as a comedy it's good to get 1, and I'll give it an extra star for the fantastic costumes.... but that's it.

If you're looking for a good 'mind games' sort of comedy in a historical vein, watch An Ideal Husband or Emma. Not this.

A great meandering story, unexpected twists, and a heavy dose of irony - don't expect Hollywood romance or sweet moralistic endings. Fun and engaging.
