Plot Summary
A student, an ex-con, an engineer, a social worker, a cop and a mentally handicapped person are caught like rats in a trap in a maze of interlocking cubes with no apparent way out. They're clueless as to how they got there or why they were chosen. Food or water is nowhere to be found, and upon further investigation, the six discover some of the rooms are booby-trapped with destructive devices.

Fresh: Surprisingly gripping.
Fresh: Cube was named best Canadian debut feature at Toronto last year, and there's no questioning Natali, clearly a visionary, is an important new talent.
Rotten: If writer-director Vincenzo Natali, storyboard artist for Keanu Reeve's Johnny Mnemonic, were as comfortable with dialogue and dramatizing characters as he is with images, this first feature of his might have worked better.
Fresh: With its enigmatic and simple premise, this works best as a series of nerve-stretching suspense sequences as the characters try to get past the killing traps.

A different kind of Sci-Fi
I'm a fan of science fiction. This movie is different in a good way. I saw this movie when it aired on the Sci-Fi Channel and loved it. It is low tempo and not your typical Hollywood canned movie that people have come to expect. This is was the first movie in the trilogy until they came out with a prequel. Give it a rent or buy if you are into science fiction. The feel is a like a "made for TV movie" but the story is very interesting and engaging. Fans of the game "Portal" will love this one.
Oddball, Low-Budget Horror
A group of caricatures are thrown into a booby-trapped maze of ever-shifting rooms that differ by the color of the lighting and the ways they're set up to maim their victims. The innovation here was that the filmmakers only needed to build one room, presumably allowing them to blow their modest budget on the wacky traps and the cast. Save for the gore, it could almost be an episode of Rod Serling's good old Twilight Zone, with characters suspecting one another of being in on the plot (the funny "Will the Real Martian Please Stand Up" comes to mind). The problem here is that Cube goes on for more than half an hour, allowing the cast to hang themselves with some melodramatic acting as they theorize and bicker and generally flip out. Why build such an extravagant meat grinder, and why abduct these people and force them through it? The characters never know; you'll never know. The writers probably never knew, either. The plot is up to the viewer to decide, a bit like a Rorschach test (how artsy). Some people will find the result interesting. Unfortunately, I found the whole idea pretty silly. Somewhere, deep inside the cube, perhaps there's a room that drops down a big screen TV and forces you to watch this film. Between that room and the acid spray and the flame thrower... hmm, which way to go... well, how strong is the acid?
Amazing
I have to be honest and say I did not want to see Cube the first time I saw it, I thought it looked "dumb". but i watched it on movie night and I was blown away.. the psychology behind this movie and just the way it was filmed was superb. It was filmed in one room, on one small set and they simply change the color of it to seem like someplace new and it WORKS! one of my favorite cult classic films of all time. I highly reccomend this movie..(hypercube...not so much)
