Plot Summary

Just before a London symposium to discredit devil-worshipping cult leader Julian Karswell (Niall MacGinnis), the mysterious death of conference organizer Henry Harrington has left American psychologist John Holden (Dana Andrews) in charge of the proceedings. Though Holden refuses to believe that his predecessor's bizarre death was the result of a curse, Harrington's niece, Joanna (Peggy Cummins), is certain that her late uncle's notes contain evidence proving Karswell has satanic powers that he is all-too-willing to use against those who threaten to expose him. But when Holden connects his own strange sensory disturbances to an ancient parchment containing a curse like the one that killed Harrington, he and Joanna must find a way to return it to Karswell before it's too late!

Customer Reviews

My favorite old movie.

Scary and cool. The great Tourneur never wanted to include the monster at the beginning and end. I agree, but that doesn't stop me from loving this. It's been a major influence and even people like Kenneth Branagh talk about remaking it.

Creepy atmosphere

Before the high tech special effects of today's films, this is what we had. But the atmosphere and great cast make up for any lack of computer generated effects, and the movie still packs a punch at the end!

Bored as a child, enthralled as an adult

I saw this when I was a kid and hated it. You hardly ever see the demon, and when you do, it's kind of disappointing. Now that I've grown up, I'm amazed at how good it is. The plot is excellent, and Julian Karswell's thoughtful, reclusive villain is brilliant. There's one scene I think I could do without, but it's more than made up for by another scene between Karswell and his mother. Very deep and not overplayed. I appreciate that in a movie, in a way I didn't when I was a kid.
