Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: To put a point to it, the lavish period costumes, operatic mise-en-scene and ceremonial grandeur of Curse of the Golden Flower clashes fatally with the nuanced nastiness of modern marital discord. – Andrew Sarris, New York Observer, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: This spectacularly decorated movie offers the enjoyment of watching Zhang chronicle the lives of one very nutty family. It also allows Zhang to load every inch of the screen with images so full that you half expect them to collapse under their own weight. – Robert Denerstein, Denver Rocky Mountain News, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: For all the swordplay and martial-arts fisticuffs, Curse is its most delirious as a lavish argument for the soap opera's roots in Greek tragedy. – Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It's big, it's beautiful, and you won't leave the theater feeling cheated, no matter how much of a letdown the finale might be. – Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel, May 13, 2009

Beautiful cinematography, sad story

Just like other Zhang Yimou's movies, this movie has beautiful cinematography. The color coordination in this colossal movie is gorgeous and very synchronous. As far as the story goes, it is engaging but kinda sad.

Astonishing!

"Curse of the Golden Flower" is a great movie with an exceptional plot, great twists, and impressive battle scenes.

Eerie...

The graphics were amazing and the plot had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The colorful costumes and settings were a plus. However there was more gore than I could handle and in a couple of points I had to fastforward because my gag reflexes being aggravated. The plot was a little eerie and depressing. However any fan of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon will, I think, enjoy this. That being said, don't watch this movie if you're a fan of the happy-go-lucky.
