Plot Summary

Cut to Black is the story of disgraced former NYPD detective Bill Ivers (Dan Eberle). Ivers is on a self-destructive path - he's plagued by debt, struggling with alcoholism, and carrying on a risky affair with his landlord's wife. Presented with a lucrative offer, Ivers agrees to help his former friend and mentor, John Lord, in a bid to reconcile with his estranged daughter Jessica (Jillaine Gill), by getting rid of a petty stalker. To do so, Ivers must enter Jessica's nocturnal world, The Confessional, the club where she works as a stripper, and contend with her suspicious boyfriend and his disreputable colleagues. Ivers uncovers a tangled web of corruption and deceit that threatens more than one life, but also offers the chance for true redemption. Shot in lavish black-and-white tones, CUT TO BLACK is a gorgeous cinematic tribute to classic Noir, set against stark, gritty urban modernity. Nobody gets away clean in this gripping story of love, loyalty, and sacrifice.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A mildly engaging lowlife odyssey that struggles not to choke on its own style. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Oct 17, 2013

Fresh: Dan Eberle pushes film noir to its subjective extreme with this well-acted, unpretentious story of a fatalistic ex-cop. – Ronnie Scheib, Variety, Oct 21, 2013

Rotten: While Eberle's execution falls short, the scale of his ambition can't help but stir admiration: In an era where indies about people sitting around talking regularly receive accolades, making a microbudget film noir takes some guts. – Zachary Wigon, Village Voice, Oct 15, 2013

Cut to Black

This is one tough gritty film and Dan once again comes thru as honest as he was in The Local. There is plenty of action with great dialogue which most action film sorely lack. Not this one. Enjoy the ride. I certainly did!
