Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: For once, Solondz seems less interested in scoring points off his characters than in creeping into their shy, sad interior worlds. – Stephanie Zacharek, Los Angeles Times, Jul 26, 2012

Fresh: Abe may deserve all that comes to him, but the question of how he got this way sustains the picture, against all odds. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Jun 21, 2012

Rotten: [Solondz] pulls one too many narrative stunts, with one too many dream sequences, calling into question the reality of everything that's happened - including that soap-operatic finale. – Amy Biancolli, San Francisco Chronicle, Jul 19, 2012

Fresh: Even though Todd Solondz' latest journey into suburban dysfunction may seem dark (and is), it's also about joy, and how easily it's wasted. – John Anderson, Newsday, Jun 22, 2012

Always Loved His Films

And this is definitely his most accomplished one yet. Without exploring any psychological underbellies or closets of his characters, he instead gently portray's them from the mind of an American imbecile. While hilariously on point with the average sub-culture moron, you still feel a sense of sorrow for him. And as the film progresses, you are exposed to his secret world of demons, and from there it becomes a deep, saddened journey. All I can say is watch it, Solondz has more understanding of human suffering than any filmmaker i've ever seen. It sort of channels Life During Wartime while still remaining completely authentic. This is my favorite film by him.

Todd Solondz Dark Horse decent

Ive seen all his films...this one is not quite as disturbing but still f up as Mr Solondz likes us to experience. I love this guys films because it makes us reflect on our own lives in the most uneasy way thinking " God I hope I don't turn out this way..the acting is spot on.
