Plot Summary

A harrowing psychological thriller from a widely acclaimed filmmaker, Daylight pits a couple lost in America against a conniving gang of kidnappers, in a personal re-imagining of the genre film. Despite its familiar genre elements, Daylight is different - a powerful, shocking piece of vigorous cinema, which fuses eroticism and tenderness with the harrowing weight of pregnancy and kidnapping. On their way to a wedding, Danny and Irene pick up a hitchhiker - throwing the film in the direction of the conventional rural kidnapper thriller. But Daylight emerges as much, much more than just another exploitation picture. The kidnappers enact a bizarre, terrifying ritual of politeness, endowing such scenes as the passing of a bread knife with a threat of ferocious violence - but also trust. Vulnerable and dangerous, a captive and a seductress, Irene struggles to survive, bringing the audience with her through to the shattering conclusion.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: An unusually delicate psychological thriller that favors suggestion over exposition. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Jul 14, 2011

Fresh: Thanks largely to the exceptional actors, particularly Martin and Meierhans, Barker sporadically infuses fresh life into stale cliches, and even makes a few of them truly compelling all over again. – Joe Leydon, Variety, Jul 14, 2011

Fresh: Replete with superior acting and visual splendor, the film is a fine instance of the overly familiar made fresh. – Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times, Oct 21, 2011

Fresh: Punctuating views of the bucolic countryside and sky attest to nature or God's indifference to human suffering, but such formalist touches don't overwhelm the responsive ensemble work in this resourceful, taboo-prodding sickie. – Nick Pinkerton, Village Voice, Jul 12, 2011

hmmm

A pretty, dark film. I'm not sure what disturbs me most, the fact that you have to be reminded how insane people can truely be, or the fact that this director captured in a believable fashion how insane people can truely be? It reminded me of the movie Trust... I wasnt right for hours after that movie ended

High Tension Brain Candy

I am not sure why the genre is classified horror but this spellbinder is a first rate psychological thriller similar to "Funny Games" or "Them". It is creepy, scary and thought provoking all at the same time. The acting was eerily realistic especially Alexandra Meierhans and Aidan Redmond. There is little slashing or gore, and no car chase or blown up stuff. The 75 minute run time passed in about 10 minutes. Ignore the bad reviews and treat yourself.

HATED IT

I rarely watch movies that I dislike this much. I don't even understand why it would be called a thriller. The best part is the commercial. If you like a boreing movie with very little action than I guess you should buy it but this is not my kind of movie.
