Plot Summary
Based on a true story. Sister Helen Prejean (Susan Sarandon) is a nun in rural Louisiana who receives a letter from Matthew Poncelet (Sean Penn), a convict who is to be executed for the rape and murder of two teenagers. After meeting Matthew, Sister Helen agrees to serve as spiritual counselor and attempt to stay the execution. However, Matthew's claims of innocence seem shaky at best, and it's clear he's a reprehensible, amoral racist. When it becomes obvious that Matthew's sentence will be carried out, Sister Helen offers what comfort she can to Matthew, but also tries to guide him to an open admission of the extent of his crimes and an acceptance of divine forgiveness. Susan Sarandon won an Oscar for her performance as Sister Prejean, and Sean Penn was similarly nominated for Best Actor as Matthew.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Penn gives an astonishing performance and delivers exactly what Dead Man Walking needs.
Fresh: Tim Robbins's balanced yet uncompromising approach refuses to judge any of the characters, including the killer (superlatively played by Sean Penn), instead giving each a fair chance to present their case with dignity and respect.
Fresh: Takes us along on the reluctant, difficult, essentially spiritual journey these two unlikely people make together.
Fresh: Acting rarely gets better than this.

Good movie.
Saw this movie in my senior year of high school. Didn't get to see the ending though.
Amazing movie!!!
I love this movie but the fact that I have to buy this movie for ten bucks just gets me frustrated. I can't even rent it. It's so expensive too! This movie is so old but still so good and there is no cheap price. Lovely movie though.
Outstanding movie!!!
Well we just watched this movie in my government and civics class because we were learning about capital punishment and after watching this movie my views have completely changed on the subject. Great movie for anyone who likes suspense.
