Plot Summary

In an age defined by crew cuts, sport coats, and cheerless conformity, he not only broke the mold ... he reinvented it. Academy Award® winner Robin Williams (Best Supporting Actor, GOOD WILL HUNTING, 1997) delivers an extraordinary performance in one of the most compelling motion pictures of all time. Williams stars as English professor John Keating, a passionate iconoclast who changes his students' lives forever when he challenges them to live life to the fullest and "Carpe Diem" -- seize the day! Keating's unconventional approach meets with irrepressible enthusiasm from his students, but the faculty at staid, exclusive Welton Academy prep school is, to put it mildly, not amused.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The movie undercuts Mr. Williams's exceptionally fine performance, making the character seem more of a dubious fool than is probably intended. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Williams, who has comparatively little screen time, has come to act, not to cut comic riffs, and he does so with forceful, ultimately compelling, simplicity. – Richard Schickel, TIME Magazine, Aug 24, 2010

Fresh: Story sings whenever Williams is onscreen. Screen belongs just as often to Leonard, who as Neil has a quality of darting confidence mixed with hesitancy. Hawke, as the painfully shy Todd, gives a haunting performance. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: It's a literate though strained uplifter, a not altogether compatible coupleting of Rocky Balboa and the Bard. – Rita Kempley, Washington Post, Apr 2, 2003
