Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: It's a talky, narrowly focused piece that feels like an after-dinner anecdote presented with the full ceremony of a formal meal. – Dennis Harvey, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: I loved it. – Julie Rigg, MovieTime, ABC Radio National, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Truly original and very moving, with a hypnotic and elliptical quality all its own. – Mark Demetrius, FILMINK (Australia), Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Fraser and Sharp have structured the film, and the cast interpret it, so that comedy and poignancy are intertwined to the last; even as all is revealed, a sense of wonder remains. – Philippa Hawker, The Age (Australia), Jun 24, 2010

Surprising

A great story, a great ending.

Dean Spanley

If you've ever loved a dog or a book-lined room, you'll love Peter O'Toole in his old age and this whimsical tale of reincarnation.

How About of Bottle of Tokay? . . .

The story of Dean Spanley is slow to unfold, but those who stick around to the end are mightely rewarded. What comes of that dinner is surprising, wonderful, and heartbreaking. This movie is a pure treasure.
