Plot Summary

When the South African government promises to 'eradicate the slums' and begins to evict shack dwellers far outside the city, three friends who live in Durban's vast shantytowns refuse to be moved. Dear Mandela follows their journey from their shacks to the highest court in the land as they invoke Nelson Mandela's example and become leaders in a growing social movement. By turns inspiring, devastating and funny, the film offers a new perspective on the role that young people can play in political change and is a fascinating portrait of South African coming of age.

Awesome, inspiring, fun movie

This film isn't just a great ride, with lots of laughs and charismatic characters, it has the best chance to change the way you think about fundamental issues of ownership, shelter and dignity of any doc you could watch. I saw it at the Brooklyn Film Festival where it won a ton of awards, and afterward the audience excitement was palpable. A beautifully shot, expertly told story about marginalized young people taking control of their fates through nothing more (or less) than the instruments of law and democracy. Watch this movie.

This documentary is so inspiring! Young people really can make a difference!!!

the incredible DEAR MANDELA

I can't understate how important DEAR MANDELA is at this moment—in the wake of Mandela's death, in the fracturing of the ANC, in the continued struggle of South Africa's countless shackdwellers, and in our own country's consideration of public housing. It's sad how many of Mandela's dreams and promises have not been realized—or have been purposefully thwarted by his own party—but the 3 young, smart, sweet, determined kids who are the voice of this film are beyond inspiring. Beautifully, if heartbreakingly, shot.
