Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The morality of revenge is barely at issue in a movie that pushes the plausibility of revenge right over a cliff. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Blunt, bloody and far too busy with its sledgehammer plot and mighty gunplay to waste time on the main character's inner life, Death Sentence is a baseline entertainment. – Steven Winn, San Francisco Chronicle, Sep 1, 2007

Rotten: Bacon's performance in Saw creator James Wan's laughably extreme revenge thriller Death Sentence is six degrees of ham. – Jack Mathews, New York Daily News, Sep 1, 2007

Rotten: Fails to provide any sort of genuine social context for its violence. – Lou Lumenick, New York Post, Jul 16, 2008

Greatest Movie Ever

This was an awesome movie. It keep me on the edge of my seat and i think the directing and story line were superbly done.

Whats wrong with you?

I don't know what the other person is but this was on of the best movies of last year

Kevin Bacon's best performance since 'The Woodsman'

I would be hard pressed to make a connection between this film and James Wan's others. While his aesthetic style is intact the genre is a very different one from that of Saw and Dead Silence. Saw was a giallo (Argento meets Cube) while Dead Silence was an homage to the old Hammer movies of the 60s and 70s. Death Sentence was an opportunity for the writer of the original Death Wish to start over from scratch (he wasn't happy with the film version of Death Wish and while not owning the film rights to his first book, he did own the rights to its sequel (Death Sentence)) which he rewrote into a remake of the first. With a better actor than the original film had, replacing Bronson with Kevin Bacon they have actually crafted a better movie. With actors like Bacon and Goodman, Wan gets a chance to actually produce the first of his films with incredible performances from the actors. While this movie isn't quite as good as say 'Man on Fire' its visually stunning and far better than the original 'Death Wish'. Kevin Bacon and John Goodman are ultimately what makes this movie as amazing as it is. This would be my second favorite of Wan's films so far. In my opinion the twist at the end of 'Saw' still makes it better movie than this, but this has to be my favorite Bacon movie since 'The Woodsman'.
