Plot Summary

Two icons of children's television are pitted against one another in this satirical dark comedy! Rainbow Randolph (Oscar-winner Robin Williams "A.I.," "Bicentennial Man"), the corrupt, costumed star of a popular children's TV show, is fired over a bribery scandal and replaced by squeaky-clean Smoochy (Oscar-nominated Edward Norton "The Score," "Fight Club"). As Smoochy catapults into fame, and scores the affections of a jaded network executive (Oscar-nominated Catherine Keener "Being John Malkovich," "Out of Sight"), he becomes the unsuspecting target of Randolph and his numerous and outrageous attempts to exact revenge and reclaim his status as America's sweetheart! Starring Oscar-nominated Danny DeVito ("Heist," "L.A. Confidential"), who also directed, Emmy-winner Jon Stewart (TV's "The Daily Show") and Emmy-nominated Harvey Fierstein (TV's "Double Platinum," "Independence Day").

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Death to Smoochy is often very funny, but what's even more remarkable is the integrity of DeVito's misanthropic vision. – J. Hoberman, Village Voice, Apr 2, 2002

Rotten: A dark comedy that blows up like an exploding cigar, leaving nothing much behind but smoke, noise and a bad taste. – Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: In Death to Smoochy, we don't get Williams' usual tear and a smile, just sneers and bile, and the spectacle is nothing short of refreshing. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 24, 2002

Rotten: A blacker than black comedy. – Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post, Jul 16, 2008

You can't change the world but you can make a dent...

This movie was a pleasant surprise, based on what I've heard it was a dark comedy gone wrong, but Norton absolutly saved it! After seeing him in so many serious roles, I was surprised how well he stepped into those big purple booties! He and Catherine Keener are very good together, Robin Williams wasn't as incessantly manic as I thought, and Stewart and Devito added extra spice to the cartoonish world of Kiddy TV. It's got a unique flavor, so I would rent before you decide to buy, but man oh man does it have some great lines.

Mesmerizingly Twisted Comedy

Death to Smoochy is one of the most unappreciated comedies of the last decade. When released, people hailed it to be absolutely god-awful. It topped Roger Ebert's list of the worst movies of 2002. It fell way under the radar, frequently aired on Comedy Central and then finally disappeared. Almost everyone involved in the production of this is ashamed for having released it. But why all the hate? Yes, this is a rather bizarre concept for a dark comedy and it changes the way you look at children's TV ever again. But more that often, its hilarious. Robin Williams delivers possibly his greatest performance as Randolph Smiley. He manages to capture a man whose bitter hatred grows to the point of insanity. Robin plays crazy in every comedy he does, why not actually make him actually crazy. Edward Norton is as charming as ever, especially when he's in that dopey purple rhino suit. Its a fine movie and I think a lot of people should give it a try.

I LOVE TIS MOVIE SMOOCHY 4 EVER

Edward Norton is hot and perfect and sweet and FUNNY. IT'S A CLASSIC MOVIE .
