Plot Summary

Academy Award-nominee Laurence Fishburne stars as Russell Stevens, Jr., a maverick Cleveland cop with a turbulent past. Handpicked by the DEA to infiltrate an international cocaine cartel based in Los Angeles, Stevens goes undercover as John Q. Hull, a bold new player with seemingly little to lose. As a cop, he swore to follow orders, to uphold justice, and to observe the law; but now the rules have changed. This "ugly side" of the war on drugs explores the context of race, identity and hypocrisy within a brutal and alienating police investigation. Nominated for an Independent Spirit award, this tale also stars Academy Award-nominee Jeff Goldblum as lawyer/narcotics dealer David Jason.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Deep Cover eventually degenerates into so much gratuitous violence that 'kill' sounds like the most-used verb in the screenplay's last stages. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Rather than ride the easy cynicism of the script, by Michael Tolkin and Henry Bean, Fishburne illuminates his character's moral struggle. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Convoluted and mostly unconvincing as a portrait of the drug underworld, Deep Cover [based on a story by Michael Tolkin] still carries some resonance due to its vivid portrait of societal decay and a heavyweight performance by Larry Fishburne. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: third-rate blaxploitation picture for the '90s, it aims to be street-tough and an admonishment against drugs. It manages to be neither. – Desson Thomson, Washington Post, Oct 31, 2007

not what you'd expect!

this movie is in many ways your garden-variety cops/thugs/drugs drama, filled with cliches you've seen dozens of times before. what elevates it above the crowd is its willingness to go places where you didn't think you'd be going. laurence fishburne's character's choices kept foiling my expectations, time and time again.
