Plot Summary
Winner of the Best Documentary award at Rome Film Festival and an audience favorite at the 2007 Telluride Film Festival, Deep Water is the remarkable, true story of the first solo, non-stop, round-the-world boat race, and the psychological toll it took on its competitors. In 1968 the Sunday Times of London sponsored the much-ballyhooed event which attracted a field of nine, including amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst. Battling treacherous seas and his own demons, Crowhurst almost immediately comes apart as he faces the isolation of nine months on the high seas. Part adventure yarn and part metaphysical mystery, this documentary from IFC Films is an unforgettable journey into one man’s heart of darkness.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: A fascinating documentary about the first single-handed around-the-world sailing race, begins like a Boy's Own adventure tale but ends up more akin to tragedy.
Fresh: A spooky, moving doc that chronicles the first solo attempt to circle the world by boat.
Fresh: Deep Water is a stunning documentary that not only beautifully elucidates a nearly forgotten incident but touches on crucial themes involving isolation, sanity, self-worth, impossible dreams, the nature of heroism and limits of human endurance.
Fresh: One of this year's better studies of the human soul.

A compelling "Man vs Nature" doc transformed into "Man vs Himself"
Seeing a producer of "Touching the Void" on credits prompted me to rent. I still can't believe some of the archival footage – it's amazing that this stuff survived considering the subject matter. I'm really glad I did. Many characters make this movie work, not only the tragic protagonist. I regret that I watched the trailer as I would've preferred not knowing a thing. My wife is a doc filmmaker and not easily impressed. She really like it too. (Minor qualm: occasionally the graphics played too much like "edit grout" and didn't move ideas/plot forward. )
Gripping, tragic, and real.
A moving story of one man's tragic failure.
Deeply Profound
This movie is about a real dream, a real journey, courage, a family, and a person who is not a hero but a real human being consumed by the largest waves of life. Well done.
