Plot Summary

A Fun Follow-Up To the Original!
"Despicable Me 2," the long-anticipated sequel to 2010's unexpected hit animated flick, follows Gru, his three adopted daughters, and those manic, mischievous Minions once again for another fun-filled adventure. And while it doesn't reach the same heights as its predecessor, at least the movie knows how to have a good time. This story, for one, is extremely silly and spontaneous. There are even times when it's almost impossible to predict what'll happen next. Although the Minions practically steal nearly every scene they're in (and trust me, they appear very frequently), it's nice that the filmmakers try to pay just as much attention to the main characters, particularly Gru and Lucy (voiced by the hilarious Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig) as they find themselves in a nutty and chaotic romantic subplot. As for the three young girls, they're definitely enjoyable to watch as well (especially Margo, voiced by Miranda Cosgrove, who gets a temporary crush on the son of the film's main villain), but they mostly get sidelined in favor of more Minion-related mischief. Story and characters aside, this movie has a lot of other entertaining stuff to offer. The animation, which is a step above the computer graphics in the original flick, is beautifully bright and exuberantly energetic, with hilarious visual details and creative sight gags that make this whole movie pop even more. Additionally, the soundtrack, which includes catchy songs by Pharrell Williams, is incredibly jazzy and upbeat. So even if it isn't as emotionally fulfilling or narratively inspired as the first flick, "Despicable Me 2" is still a satisfyingly silly animated treat for viewers of all ages thanks to its witty script, charming characters, and breezy action. If you wanna be solidly entertained for an hour and a half, look no further.
A DELIGHTFULLY "DESPICABLE" SEQUEL!
With the same teams of writers and directors taking charge once again, "Despicable Me 2" sticks fairly closely to the winning formula of the original: pile on so much snappy, witty humor and colorful wackiness that no one will worry about the plot. And while there's nothing particularly inventive or memorable about it, this movie is still sweetly engaging and relentlessly hysterical enough to make it a wildly enjoyable ride from beginning to end. After discovering his less villainous side, Gru (Steve Carell) is now trying to go 'legit' with his sidekick Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand) and their horde of mischievous Minions. Gru is also enjoying being a father to his three adopted daughters Margo, Edith, and Agnes (Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, and Elsie Fisher). Soon, he meets undercover spy Lucy (Kristen Wiig) and her boss Silas (Steve Coogan), who ask for his help in hunting down the bad guy who stole a secret government chemical. Gru hesitantly takes the job, and his suspicion falls on Eduardo (Benjamin Bratt), not because he looks just like former fellow villain El Macho, but because Margo has a crush on his surly teen son (Moisés Arias). Just like its predecessor, the flick mixes sweet family sentimentality with an overabundance of cartoon slapstick in which nearly everyone gets smashed, pounded, and blown up but emerges entirely unscathed to face the next bit of outrageous mayhem. Some may find the violent undercurrents a little disturbing (especially when kids are talking about murder), but the movie's gleefully ridiculous tone constantly reminds us to stop taking anything seriously. Thankfully, we're all consistently distracted by the flashy, brightly-colored, action-packed animation, which makes especially clever use of the 3D. It also helps that each individual scene is hilariously detailed, including references to film classics, a nonstop stream of riotous sight gags, and a ton of over-the-top action sequences that manage to be funny and thrilling in equal measure. Once again, those yellow, interchangeable, pill-shaped Minions steal the show with their amusing gibberish dialogue and refusal to do anything as expected. And the talented voice actors put all their egos aside to create a cast of thoroughly likable characters. Carell and Wiig in particular share some of the funniest chemistry I've probably ever seen in any animated flick. So even if this sequel isn't much more than a lot of frenetic chaos woven in with some kid-friendly toilet jokes, the high-energy goofiness and inventive, eye-popping animation at least keep us laughing all the way through. Sure, it may not quite reach the same heights as the terrific 2010 original, but "Despicable Me 2" still stands as a solid film the whole family can enjoy. Kids will love the Minions' crazy antics and fast-paced action, while grown-ups can appreciate the clever references and sly in-jokes. So yeah, it's pretty much a win-win for everyone here. If you haven't seen this delightfully hyperactive animated comedy yet, well, what are you waiting for? Go out and see it for yourself. Fans of the first adventure won't be disappointed.

The first movie was a huge success and everyone loved it. But now the second movie is here with more humor, action, and Minions!!
