Plot Summary

DIANA takes audiences into the private realm of one of the world’s most iconic and inescapably public women -- the Princess of Wales, Diana (two-time Oscar® nominee NAOMI WATTS) -- in the last two years of her meteoric life. On the occasion of the 16th anniversary of her sudden death, acclaimed director Oliver Hirschbiegel (the Oscar®-nominated Downfall) explores Diana’s final rite of passage: a secret love affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (NAVEEN ANDREWS, “Lost,” The English Patient), the human complications of which reveal the Princess’s climactic days in a compelling new light.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: [Hirschbiegel] nicely conveys an intimate restlessness, only to blow the mood with ominous tidings. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Oct 31, 2013

Rotten: Lacks any insight into the characters involved, and surely would have the late Princess of Wales rolling in her grave. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Oct 31, 2013

Rotten: The movie may not be great, but for some it will be a fine guilty pleasure. – Jocelyn Noveck, Associated Press, Nov 1, 2013

Rotten: If you are going to make a film about the late Princess of Wales, you are obviously going to choose the guy who directed "Downfall," about the last days of Hitler, and the actress who played opposite King Kong. – Anthony Lane, New Yorker, Nov 4, 2013

Missing the real reason.

While it is interesting that a relatively unknown love of Diana is given more credence than the relationship with Dodi Fahed, the movie completely misses the more likely reason for Diana's death. Anyone familiar with the news surrounding her butler Paul Burrell's trial, the Queen's sudden intermission in that trial, the description of the video that was among the missing items at the time of his home burglery and the VERY sudden REVERSAL of the Queen's stance on Charles' marriage to Camilla and its timing and PR overkill can come to their own conclusion about why someone might want Diana dead. Her relationship with the cardiac surgeon wasn't it. Google is a wonderful thing.

FORGET the other reviews. It's beautiful.

What are these other reviewers thinking??? I am not a Naomi fan particularly, but this is a tremendous performance and though the script could use improvements as well as the one note performance by Naveen Andrews - the film shows us a vulnerable yet powerful Princess. LOVED it.

mildly entertaining

Somewhat slow moving, and there seemed to be little chemistry between the two main characters. I never could figure out just what drew them together.
