Plot Summary

Danielle (Juno Temple of THE THREE MUSKETEERS) is an audacious and promiscuous Oklahoma high school student in the late 1980s. Her teachers don’t approve of her attitude, and her mother (Milla Jovovich of RESIDENT EVIL) is about to marry a Mormon who Danielle detests. Amidst the turmoil of her troubles, she is paired with shy, gay classmate Clarke (Jeremy Dozier of TV’s ICARLY) for a family planning project. Their unexpected friendship prompts them to run away to Fresno in search of Danielle’s birth father, with their bag of flour “baby Joan” in tow. The road trip leads Danielle and Clarke on a funny, heartfelt journey full of glorious 80’s tunes.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: A well-meaning, misbegotten frenzy of confused impulses. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Oct 6, 2011

Rotten: What begins as a politically incorrect, Mean Girls-esque satire constantly shifts tone and focus as director Abe Sylvia pursues a style as jumbled as his narrative. – Peter Debruge, Variety, Oct 5, 2011

Rotten: [Sylvia's] attempts at situational humor on the road - including a stripping scene for Dozier as coming-out metaphor - fall embarrassingly flat. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Oct 7, 2011

Rotten: A feeble teenage-outcast movie set in 1987, Dirty Girl exists primarily as a vehicle for first-time writer-director Abe Sylvia's favorite Reagan-era jams. – Melissa Anderson, Village Voice, Oct 4, 2011

Great adventure

Awesome movie!!!

You either connect or you don't...

I connected. Whether it was the music of my youth, or the struggle of coming out, or knowing the bond between the gay boy and bad girl, something struck a chord. I was even touched by the parents. I laughed, i cried. If you think too much, it can be predictable but if you let go and just enjoy the ride you'll be glad you did.

Quirky and sweet

I found my new favorite movie. Quirky, funny, charming and perfectly poignant in all the right places.
