Plot Summary
Over twenty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa’s District 9 as the world’s nations argued over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens’ welfare – they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens’ awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA. The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley), contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable – he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: It's a brashly confident debut, full of sharp, inventive detail (the prawns are crazy for cat food) and rooted in a couple of Big Ideas. Well worth the time, if not all of it.
Fresh: You don't feel bamboozled, fooled, or patronized by District 9, as you did by most of the summer blockbusters. You feel winded, shaken, and shamed.
Fresh: This is a great movie.
Fresh: Aliens clash with humans in combustible sci-fier.

Best movie of the year!
Imagine,a budget of only $30 million, complete newcomers to acting, writing, and animators strait out of college. Now imagine all that in the fresh, creative, and very much capable hands of Neil Blomkamp and academy-award winning director Peter Jackson. Together, the two have created the most intense, visually stunning, touching, and if not most important, pshycological film I've seen in my whole life. Buy it,watch it,become amazed, and see it dominate the 2009 Oscars.
Unexpectedly awesome! Better than Transformers!
That's right! BETTER THAN TRANSFORMERS! And that means a lot coming from a big Transformers Movie fan like me. But it is true. Ever since I first saw the District 9 teaser trailer I had wanted to see this movie really badly. Then when I saw that it was rated R I started having second thoughts like "maybe it is more of a horror film" and "what if this means that it will be TOO bloody" but those were false thoughts. Quite frankly I don't see why this film is rated R, but I guess, because of the overuse of the "f word", is why it is R. But when the main character talks, it sounds like "fook" so its not that big of a deal. It isn't too bloody of a film either, all the blood is basically, in a way, a jelly donut exploding, like Halo Videogame gore for example; cartoony yet real looking. But the biggest highlight is that the story is just purely amazing and new, which is a BIG deal since most movies nowadays seem to go by similar standards! Unlike most alien movies, in this film WE are the enemy and they land in another country besides AMERICA! Also this movie was unexpectedly moving, when you see the bond between the main human and alien character. The end was so perfectly done, with the music and visuals. Plus, half of the movie was filmed like a documentary, which made you feel more like it was something that ACTUALLY took place. All of the characters you grow to hate during the film get their proper comeuppance in the end, and everyone loves that! THIS REVIEW IS GETTING TOO LONG! Overall, without spoiling too much, you should DEFFINETLY see this movie! It has plenty of action, a great plot, and is just superbly done! District 9 is most deffinetly one of my new favorite movies! CAN"T WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL!
One of the best scifi movies and one the best!!
This one was a suprise puch at the end of the summer. When all walked home dissapointed with the crap they got from Transformers 2 and Gi joe. This amazing flick came out. Considering all these guys are working on a movie for the first time this is incredible!!! Sharlto Copely as Wikus was an excellent preformace. The story is genius, the characters are great, and the action is sickening in an exciting way. This movie paints a picture about the effects of bigotry and racism and the greed of human kind!! I warn you this is not your typical fun movie, it is quite deep and many times disturbing. The violence is gory and the f word is used more 130 times....but it is used to make a point! Best film of 2009 and one of the best ever scifis! Definetly give it a watch!!
