Plot Summary

More money flows through the family courts, and into the hands of courthouse insiders, than in all other court systems in America combined – over $50 billion a year and growing. Through extensive research and interviews with the nation’s top divorce lawyers, mediators, judges, politicians, litigants and journalists, DIVORCE CORP. uncovers how children are torn from their homes, unlicensed custody evaluators extort money, and abusive judges play god with people’s lives while enriching their friends. This explosive documentary reveals the family courts as unregulated, extra-constitutional fiefdoms. Rather than assist victims of domestic crimes, these courts often precipitate them. And rather than help parents and children move on, as they are mandated to do, these courts – and their associates – drag cases out for years, sometimes decades, ultimately resulting in a rash of social ills, including home foreclosure, bankruptcy, suicide and violence. Solutions to the crisis are sought out in countries where divorce is handled in a more holistic manner.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The tone ranges from wounded to disgusted, but a movie positing this deep a rot in the system needs to be more measured and better made to take hold. – Nicolas Rapold, New York Times, Jan 9, 2014

Rotten: A vigorous but clumsily argued expose of the corrupt family-court practices that have turned one of life's more painful experiences into a $50 billion-a-year industry. – Justin Chang, Variety, Jan 14, 2014

Fresh: Any divorce survivor will see rueful reminders of a destructive process. Any engaged couple should see it, period. – Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Jan 9, 2014

Amazingly Accurate

I am a family law divorce mediator in Jupiter Florida with iMediate. This is an accurate depiction of a broken system. Divorce is big business and the attorneys prey on people looking for help in their darkest hour of need. People need to see this and be aware of the truth. Thank God 48 states now require mediation as it is the BEST alternative to litigation. Litigation destroys families. Mediation can peacefully transition people into the next phase of their life.

Felt as if it was my divorce process that was made into a movie!

If I had watched this movie before my divorce started, I would have saved 1 million dollars of our children's money. The lawyers and other (un) professionals instill fear that I will loose the children and extract thousands of dollars from helpless parents. Fathers are highly prejudiced against in the family courts. Being black in the last century and being a father in family courts now probably feels the same! Discrimination. The judge kept saying to the lawyers, I don't want to take food out of your table, come back in 3 months, come back in another 3 months.....intentionally feeding these greedy lawyers.

Travis Grassel, Iowa Fathers

This documentary will exponentially expedite the changes in the Family Law System that are overdue. My personal thank you goes out to Joe and Andrew for a job well done!
