Plot Summary

Based on the Hugh Lofting series of stories, Doctor Dolittle is a magical, musical extravaganza that follows the adventures (and misadventures) of the eccentric Doctor Dolittle, played by Oscar winner Rex Harrison. Dolittle, a kindly veterinarian living in an animal-filled apartment, learns that his parrot speaks 468 animal languages. Dolittle has the parrot teach him all of them and soon he finds himself making friends with his animals - enjoying their company more than humans.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The music is not exceptional, the rendering of the songs lacks variety, and the pace, under Richard Fleischer's direction, is slow and without surprise. Indeed, toward the end it is perfunctory. Things happen mechanically. – Bosley Crowther, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Rotten: Leslie Bricusse's adaptation retains the delightful aspects while taking considerable liberty with the plot. His music and lyrics, while containing no smash hits, are admirably suited to the scenario. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: It's so clumsy and pounding that taking a child to it might be grounds for a visit from family services. – Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Not even a decent performance from Richard Attenborough can save this disappointing production. – Ian Nathan, Empire Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

I Love Dr. Dolittle

I absolutely love this movie. In my opinion it is better than the more recent one with Eddie Murphy. If you like older movies and musicals, you will like this movie!

Great Movie!

When i first saw this movie it was really good and it's the kind of movie that you would want to watch over and over again i also agree that it is better than the one that Eddie Murphy has out right now and that Rex Harrison is wonderful in it he really makes you believe that all animals are great and that you can always do something to help them.

A winning tail...

If you love animals and musicals you will be barking up the right tree to get this movie. It is a classic movie for generations. I remember seeing this and wishing I could travel in a pink sea snail. I still continue to enjoy this movie. Ah the sweetness of the older movies. Best thing to share in a movie is a light hearted and nonviolent one to family, friends, and especially yourself. Movies such as this is a great stress reliever. It is a tail wagging good time.
