Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Double Indemnity is the season's nattiest, nastiest, most satisfying melodrama. – TIME Magazine, Mar 7, 2014

Fresh: MacMurray has seldom given a better performance. It is somewhat different from his usually light roles, but is always plausible and played with considerable restraint. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: The film is a brilliant collision of evil and the mundane, and one of the reasons viewers respond to it so well is that it makes the mundane seem a little sexier in the resulting debris. – Douglas Pratt, Hollywood Reporter, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: This expert night of the Hollywood soul is such a genre axiom it practically scans like a mid-'40s shopper's catalogue for noiristes ... – Michael Atkinson, Village Voice, Jul 29, 2014

SUSPENSE!

LITERALLY SUSPENSE,perhaps one of the most suspensful i have seen. this movie is SO entertaining from start to finish,i LOVED it. the best part is the part on the train. watch this movie it is VERY VERY good

Two superb performances, one fine film

The guy we think of as friendly, not-too-bright Fred MacMurray becomes a villain Bogart would strain to equal as a cocky, amoral insurance salesman who gets in over his head with calculating femme fatale Barbara Stanwyck, and finds everything coming apart as he tries to untangle himself from a murder. Stanwyck is sometimes brilliant; Edward G. Robinson, as MacMurray's suspicious colleague, is unforgettable throughout. Not many 70-year-old films can keep me on the edge of my seat, but Double Indemnity had me teetering from the brilliant first shots to the finale. If this didn't win an Oscar for cinematography, it should have.

One of the all time greats
