Plot Summary
Always one step ahead of the Feds, Paul Boxer is the most inventive and principled smuggler in the trade, and has never needed to carry a gun. When violent mid-level traffickers coerce him into designing a foolproof plan to bring ten kilos of cocaine across the México border, he maneuvers to rid himself of their hold over him once and for all. However, when a sharp and beautiful woman from his past enlists his help to escape this rival outfit, Paul must confront the man that is hunting him down, and choose between his livelihood as a drug runner and his integrity as a man.

If you loved “Drive” - watch this film!
This is an incredible fast-paced thriller with a fresh, personal take on the drug runner action/thriller set piece. The film’s aesthetic is beautifully balanced; eye-popping highly stylised neon night scenes contrast with the vivid heath of Mexican locations. If you liked Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Drive” or have a fondness for character driven action thrillers with eye-catching aesthetics and cracking soundtracks - you’ll love this film.
A good fit for me.
Not particularly innovative, but it has everything that matters. Stylish cinematography and an aggressive synth soundtrack evokes crime dramas like Michael Mann's Thief and Walter Hill's The Driver. As someone who craves old-school testosterone-fueled storytelling and is tired of the hollywood gloss, this was a good fit for me. Its low budget is felt but blows so many bigger budget movies out of the water. Recommended.
Just rent it now
Late last night my family was asleep and after a strong coffee I was wide away in our hotel room (We're away for the weekend) and I was trawling through new releases but nothing popped out. Then I saw 'Down and Dangerous' and after watching the trailer thought what the hell I'll give it a go. I had slight reservations after reading about the tiny budget, etc. but wow…just wow.
Minuscule budget aside this is a fantastic film. The performances are strong, the editing great and the cinematography and music truly inspired. I loved every minute of it, I can't wait to see it again, thankfully iTunes I think gives me another few hours to watch it again.
There are obvious comparisons with 'Drive' here but 'Drive' is an inferior film because of it's pretentious slow mo every five minutes and weaker characters. DAD pushes forward relentlessly, coming across almost like a cross between a Michael Mann and early John Woo film.
I loved it. What a great film, really inspired and huge fun.
