Plot Summary

Director Robert Altman reteams with Cookie's Fortune scribe Anne Rapp for this tale of a Dallas gynecologist and the parade of anxious patients, haggard family members, and potential love interests who come his way. Richard Gere plays the titular role of Dr. Sullivan Travis, a calm, successful, and much sought-after ob-gyn who witnesses his normally stable life come apart over the course of one rainy autumn. As the film opens, Dr. T and his wife Kate (Farrah Fawcett) are preparing for the wedding of their Dallas Cowboys cheerleader daughter Dee Dee (Kate Hudson). Their other daughter — the Kennedy-assassination conspiracy theorist Connie (Tara Reid) — has her doubts about the impending nuptials, but Dr. T chalks them up to routine sibling jealousy. Meanwhile, escaping a messy divorce, boozy sister-in-law Peggy (Laura Dern) moves into the Travis household with her three toddler daughters in tow. For release, Dr. T finds solace target shooting and golfing (occasionally at the same time) with his buddies, and at his country club, he meets a beguiling golf pro, Bree (Helen Hunt). When the childlike Kate loses her grip on reality during a flatware shopping spree, Bree offers to give the kindly doctor some lessons in his swing — both on and off the fairways. Dr. T had its North American Premiere at the 2000 Toronto International Film Fest.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Lacks the resonance of a major Altman film ... but it's a funny and ebullient look at a man in full confusion. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Sep 7, 2011

Fresh: Altman and his congenially matched screenwriter Anne Rapp wrap some stinging psychological and emotional observations in a beguiling package. – Todd McCarthy, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: After the film wanders for two hours, growing more and more absurd, it ends in an extremely unsatisfying way. – Christy Lemire, Associated Press, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Has hardly any plot at all, or believable characters. – Steve Murray, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Mar 7, 2005

Not good

Believe it or not, I work in the building which serves as the insane asylum in this movie (it's a masonic retirement home in reality), and even with that, I couldn't sit through this entire thing. Run from it.

Worst movie I have ever seen!

Would that there were a way to assign this movie a zero. My theory is that these actors got together on a bet to see if they could make money just on their names using the most horrible script known to man combined with embarrassing performances by every single one of the well-known actors and... well, this movie has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Don't waste your time or your money on this one - YUK!!!! As a joke on the movie-going public who will buy anything with the "right" stars, I give it a TEN, however.

HORRIFIC!

As other people, this is a movie you can't even finish!!! I am a woman... and if you enjoy sitting around listening to 10 women NAG ALL AT THE SAME TIME, then feel free to watch this movie. I couldn't believe I bought this DVD. Gere must have been desperate. This was a pathetic attempt at making a movie. This might even be the absolute WORST movie of all time!! Bad itunes for wasting space and putting this for sale!!
