Plot Summary

Will Atenton (Daniel Craig) quit a high-profile job in Manhattan to relocate his wife, Libby (Oscar®-winner Rachel Weisz), and their two daughters to a quaint New England town. When Will investigates, he’s not sure if he’s seeing ghosts or if the tragic events are somehow related to his past. The only clues come from his mysterious neighbor, Ann (Oscar®-nominee Naomi Watts), who helps him piece together this haunting puzzle. Full of twists and suspense, this psychological thriller will have you on the edge of your seat.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: This crackpot thriller from the usually competent Jim Sheridan leaves only one mystery unsolved: what on earth was he thinking? – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Sep 30, 2011

Rotten: This suburban gothic is a logy, convoluted mess. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Oct 1, 2011

Rotten: Daniel Craig does everything to dispel comparisons to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining with a finely tuned performance, but the film flattens as it tries to explain his character's psychological state. – Robert Koehler, Variety, Sep 30, 2011

Rotten: Sheridan can't ever quite get hold of the tone and falls back on a default dreaminess (the little girls play a shaky rendition of Beethoven's "Fur Elise" more than once) that never quite convinces. – Mark Olsen, Los Angeles Times, Sep 30, 2011

SHAMELESSLY AWFUL!

"Dream House" is undoubtedly one of the most poorly conceived, horribly paced, and easily predictable movies of this year, or this decade for that matter. I was fooled into thinking this was gonna be an enjoyable film since one of my friends saw it before me and told me he liked it. Plus, I'm a sucker for any flick starring Daniel Craig. Although, I should've taken a look at the Rotten Tomatoes reviews beforehand because what I endured for over 90 minutes was one of the most painfully monotonous movies I've seen in a long time. The character development was overly shoddy and practically nonexistent, the screenplay pretty much ripped off almost every notable psychological thriller ever made, the pacing of the story was unbelievably slow, and you could practically see the "twist" ending coming from a mile away. Now that I think about it, even the trailer of this film is a complete joke. Please, just do yourselves a favor and leave this page ASAP so you won't have to suffer the pain I felt while watching this shameful abomination to cinema. I suggest renting a classic like "The Shining" instead. Speaking of that movie, did anyone else notice how the two creepy little girls holding hands on the poster are eerily similar to those in Stanley Kubrick's film? What a fail!

Really Liked It!

Overall I thought it was a well made and entertaining movie. Good acting, good story, a fun movie. Don't listen to the critics on this one.

Got what I expected

I am fascinated by critics who feel they need to critique each film as though to satisfy a self-righteous classical education. Although the film was a bit predictable with a lack luster performance by some very credible actors, the film was exactly what I expected.
