Plot Summary

Ryan (Troy Gentile), Wade (Nate Hartley) and Emmit (David Dorfman) attend their first day at high school and they’re pumped…until they meet up with Filkins (Alex Frost), a school bully who comes off like a little Hannibal Lecter. Before they become completely engulfed in Filkins’ reign of terror, they seek out some protection by placing an ad in Soldier of Fortune magazine. Their best response – and the cheapest – comes from Drillbit Taylor (Owen Wilson), a down-on-his luck soldier of fortune who lives a homeless – he likes to say “home-free” – existence on the beach. He enrolls them in some physical and mental training.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Without focus, without apparent intention, the movie floats along, stringing various incidents together, and in the end seems much longer than it is. It feels like 2 1/2 hours. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Trying to mix farce with heart, Drillbit Taylor is instead as soulful as Kenny G and as wacky as public television. – Kyle Smith, New York Post, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: It's no wedgie, but after a while Drillbit Taylor feels like its own form of torment. – Darel Jevens, Chicago Sun-Times, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Too much of Drillbit Taylor is the kind of formulaic free-for-all that does Wilson no good, nor anybody else. – Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer, Jun 24, 2010

Superbad For Pre-Teens

What It's About: After 3 kids are tormented to death by bullies on their 1st day of their high school careers, they decide to look for a bodyguard to protect them from the school bullies. Instead, they hire 'Drillbit Taylor', a homeless man who needs some money to get to Canada to start a new life. Is It Good?: I had very high expectations from this film, due to the Apatow producing of the film and the co-writing of the great Seth Rogen (the mustached cop from Superbad), and they were met, not exceded, but met. What made them not met was the utter lack of quality staff in this school. There is so much tolerance for these bullies who just beat the hell out of these kids that it's sickening. There is no responsible faculty, no assistant principal, and lack of a principal who cares. The 1st twenty minutes of the film reminded me of the 'Nelson Mandela Boot Camp' sketch on Chappelle's Show (See Episode 211). But all and all the film was very good, had a happy ending, and the antagonists got what was coming to them. Deja Vu?: Is it just me, or was film ALOT like Superbad? Hmm..let's see..who does Troy Gentile look like? Jonah Hill. Who does Nate Hartley remind us of? Michael Cera. Last but no least, who does David Dorfman remind us of? You guessed it..Christopher Mintz-Passe! But you know what, that was what I loved about the film. It's like Seth, Evan, & Fogell starting 9th grade, and who doesn't want to see a movie like that? (Note: The film doesn't have the blatent sexual content that Superbad does, so it's like Seth, Evan & Fogell were given a shot that made them swear every 5 seconds in their softmore year.) Recasting!: If I were the casting director, I would get Seth Rogen to replace Owen Wilson. I just don't think that Owen Wilson takes the sleazbag type of role seriously enough. Don't get me wrong, he's a fine actor, but I think Seth Rogen is funnier and has expierience with this type of role. And another quick recast, the guy who plays Drillbit's best friend in the movie. The one with the longer hair and he kind of looks like the main charecter's neighbor from 'Office Space', I think he was OK, but to make that role REALLY shine, I would suggest John C. Reily for the role instead. He's really impressing me lately, with his upcoming film 'Stepbrothers' is coming out. Do NOT Skip Past The Following Parts: When Troy Gentile & Nate Hartley are practicing fighting moves on each other, the rap battle between Troy Gentile and one of the bullies, and when their are jokes about JFK and Tupac get shot. You'll know about the 2Pac one because it's right after the rap battle. I just know that Seth Rogen put those in there to make it step just a little out of the PG-13 Rating. GO SETH ROGEN!

It's Cool. It's Crazy & It's Funny...... Very Very Funny! (5/5)

Another classic comedy!

This 1 goes up there with the others! This is a must see comedy that at times was called over rated but is the exact oposite! Its can be laugh out loud hilarious at times and is a pleasure to watch more than once.
