Plot Summary

Luke and Kate are co-workers at a Chicago brewery, where they spend their days drinking and flirting. They’re perfect for each other, except that they’re both in relationships. Luke is in the midst of marriage talks with his girlfriend of six years, and Kate is playing it cool with her music producer boyfriend Chris. But you know what makes the line between “friends” and “more than friends” really blurry? Beer.

This movie is what you think it is

Let me describe you: finding a good rental on iTunes has been a struggle this summer. Your only oasis has been documentaries. You've been sucked into some rentals because you recognize 1-2 characters from a TV show or another movie you liked.

Don't be fooled by Drinking Buddies...it is a continuation of the status quo for the summer of 2013 (aka, summer of movie discontent).

Step 1: purchase one "name brand" actor. In this case it is Olivia Wilde.

Step 2: bring back a legend! It is that dude from Office Space / Carrie Bradshaw's post it note break up!

Step 3: recognizable TV star from your demographic. Jake Johnson from New Girl.

And this is where it all falls apart. Instead of sticking to the light hearted and funny script of so many romantic comedies, Drinking Buddies deviates from that script all together.

I know what you're thinking: that is great! this is not just another romantic comedy!

False. It's worse, neither romantic nor funny, Drinking Buddies makes a real attempt at portraying complicated real life relationships of the 30 somethings of 2013. The trouble is, real life is very tough to do with comedy or amazing character development added into the mix. Two things that Drinking Buddies lacks entirely.

Waste of time and money! Super slow movie with no story...

Worst movie ever

I can't believe I paid for this movie. There was absolutely no plot development. I wasted an hour and a half waiting for something to happen, and it never did. The previews made it seem interesting, and it got so many positive reviews--but I'd think twice about renting. I didn't know that the lines were improvised, so it makes sense why the dialogue was so strange and it was just awkward. There was no chemistry between any of the characters, and I didn't find Olivia Wilde's character charming at all, even though I think she is supposed to be "witty".

I usually don't write reviews, but I felt the need to warn anybody who is considering this movie. Don't do it. I was tricked by the reviews and the preview. If you really want to watch it, wait until it's at Redbox or something. I repeat, worst movie ever.
