Plot Summary
No one in the quiet little town of Verplanck, New York seems to blink when one of its best-known and least-liked residents, Mona Dearly (Bette Midler), drives her Yugo into the Hudson to her death. Bound by duty to investigate, Police Chief Wyatt Rash (Danny DeVito) soon discovers it wasn't an accident. But the chief gets precious little help from the citizenry, as Mona was not one of Verplanck's favorite citizens. Career waitress Rona (Jamie Lee Curtis) didn't have a problem seducing both Mona's husband Phil (William Fichtner) and son Jeff (Marcus Thomas), and Mona made life miserable for Jeff's business partner Bobby (Casey Affleck) and his fiancée (Neve Campbell). When Chief Rash asks "Who would like to see Mona Dearly dead?" the same answer keeps coming back, who wouldn't?

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Mona is a dreary crash of malapropisms and slapstick maimings wrapped very loosely around a murder mystery.
Rotten: Too pleased with its own outrageousness.
Rotten: Once you sit through the rest of this comedic approximation of a soak in pond scum, you may wish you had joined her in the Hudson River.
Rotten: A backwoods slapstick that lacks the anarchy needed for true farce.

A classic...but good any night.
OK...so the rotten tomato meter is plugged down at 28 percent. HUH??? This movie rocks. My wife and I laughed our a***** off at this. Especially at the vengeful knife throwing contest at the county fair. This movie rivals Woody Allen...really, could it be any funnier. Is it corny??? No. Because I actually live in a dinky town like this where everyone drives around in a ford escort wagon. I think the police do to. It's a great laugh...and is worth five stars all the way. Best actor...hmmm I'm not sure...perhaps the Yugo car...always running around killing people. DO NOT believe the tomato meter this movie is a hoot. I'd buy this before a lot of other crap on the internet for a nice wife/husband or girlfriend/boyfriend movie...
Great flick
This movie is truly one of the funniest around. The casting of this movie was excellent. Bette Midler clearly embraced this role and delivered a masterpiece. Danny Devito and Jamie Lee Curtis as well? You should DEFINITELY buy this movie. At THIS price? What a steal. Enjoy.
Very Funny
This movie isn't for everyone, but is one of my favorites. The subtle jokes and use of irony are very funny. Not Bette Midler's best performance - a little overdone, but the rest of the cast is superb. Gets 4 stars from me.
