Plot Summary

A pointed political satire, Duck Soup is the Marx Brothers' funniest and most insane film. Groucho is Rufus T. Firefly, the hilarious dictator of mythical Freedonia. Harpo and Chico are commissioned as spies by Groucho's political rival, the calculating Trentino (Louis Calhern). The film contains many of the Brothers' famous sequences: the lemonade stand, a masterpiece of slow burn; the Paul Revere parody; the "We're Going To War" number, a beautiful spoof of '30s musicals; the hilarious mirror scene; and a final battle episode that has been copied by everyone from Woody Allen to Mad Magazine.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Duck Soup should make practically everybody laugh. – Joe Bigelow, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: The Marx Brothers created a body of work in which individual films are like slices from the whole, but Duck Soup (1933) is probably the best. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jan 20, 2006

Fresh: The Marx Brothers' best movie... – Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It also includes what is perhaps the Brothers' funniest scene ever: an immaculately timed and performed sequence with a broken mirror in which Groucho, Chico and Harpo look absolutely identical. A masterpiece. – Geoff Andrew, Time Out, Aug 16, 2007

One of the Funniest Movies Ever Made in the History of Cinema!

The Marx Brothers. The Original Kings of Slapstick Comedy and practically the inventors of it. The Marx Brothers have made four of the most funniest movies ever made inlcuding Hores Feathers, A Day at the Races, Monkey Business, A Night at the Opera (their second funniest film) and of course Duck SOup, their funniest film ever made. At that time, Duck Soup was a flop for Paramount and nearly bankrupted them. Do not let that fool you. Duck Soup is considered one of the funniest movies ever made in the history of Cinema and is in the top 10 on AFI"s 100 Years 100 Laughs, The Funniest Movies of all Tim next to classics such as The Producers, Blazing Saddles, It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Tootsie, Ghostbusters, and of course Some Like it Hot, the funniest movie ever made. The Marx Brothers were a comedic force that took the world by storm with Groucho and his insult comic getup, cigar and grease mustahce, Chico with his forged Italian accent, piano genius and bumbling conman persona and of course Harpo with his mute, hysterical impressions and slapstick routines. Those of you who do not know who the Marx Brothers are, you've missed out on the birth of slapstick and insult comedy, these guys practically invented comedy with the likes of Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and "Fatty" Arbuckle who invented physical comedy. The Marx Brothers are the best comedic duos in the history of cinema and no one will be able to top them in sheer genuis, musical prowress or deliverance, not now, not ever. Long live the Marx Brothers!!!

meh its okay

Duck soup is said to be one of the funniesy Marx Bros movies but the best is still "A Night at the Opera". It's still a good movie overall but it lacks the luster from Opera

I LOVE THIS MOVIE

If you only ever buy one Marx brothers movie in your lifetime this is the one worth every buck. I can think of no other movie comparable to this one except perhaps "Quest for the Holy Grail"
