Plot Summary

From Tim Burton comes an unforgettable fairy tale starring Johnny Depp, Wynona Ryder, Dianne Wiest and Vincent Price as the Inventor. Once upon a time in a castle high on a hill lived an inventor whose greatest creation was named Edward. Although Edward had an irresistible charm, he wasn't quite perfect. The inventor's sudden death left him unfinished, with sharp shears of metal for hands. Edward lived alone in the darkness until one day a kind Avon lady took him home to live with her family. And so began Edward's fantastical adventures in a pastel paradise known as Suburbia.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Mr. Burton invests awe-inspiring ingenuity into the process of reinventing something very small. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: The romanticism has a personal dimension -- for Edward is, of course, Burton's surreal portrait of himself as an artist: a wounded child converting his private darkness into outlandish pop visions. Like Edward, he finds the light. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Apr 12, 2011

Fresh: Burton's richly entertaining update of the Frankenstein story is the year's most comic, romantic and haunting film fantasy. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Nov 24, 2006

Fresh: A delightful and delicate comic fable. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fantasic

There is always a fine line between a comedy and a tragedy. This movie is proof of that. I saw this movie for the first time a long time ago and then it kind of shocked me. I saw it again recently and it has become one of my favorite movies and since then I've watched it multiple times. Edward Scissorhands first started out as a character from Tim Burton's mind as a teenager. That is probably the reason I love it so much. I've always loved stories about a strange, isolated character, who at some point comes out into the open, and then is forced back into their hidding place because they are not accepted in society. Edward is was an unfinished creation, left by himself with only scissors for hands. When local Avon representative kindly takes him home with her he finds it hard to communicate with others after being isolated for so long, especialy when he falls in love with the daughter of the family. You can see a very dark side of society from his view of it as an outsider. I think the reason it shocked me so much when I was younger, was because of how his gentle, innocent, eager demeanor was quickly changed in a kind of social death from all the precieved notions, misunderstandings and interpretations of others. Johnny portrays him well in a almost silent, but extremely expressive role. This movie hilarious, heart breaking and it's one of those plots that you'll be tossing around in your mind for days after you've seen it.

FINALLY!!!

this is one of the grastest movies of all time!!! unfortunately, it's also one of the most unrecognized and misunderstood movies. YES, it is a comedy. NO, edward is not an evil character. he happens to be one of the CUTEST THINGS THAT'S EVER LIVED!!!!!!
