Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The filmmakers behind "Elemental" might have done better to commit to a single portrait and been more fearless about avoiding familiar oratory, but small steps are progress too. – Nicolas Rapold, New York Times, May 16, 2013

Fresh: The insightful contrasts within the aggregate picture make up for the film's leisurely pace and lack of narrative propulsion. – Inkoo Kang, Village Voice, May 14, 2013

Fresh: Elemental speaks to the importance of protecting the natural elements: water, air, earth. It's a beautifully filmed piece, even when it's showing us white clouds of pollutants billowing out of a smokestack. – Michael O'Sullivan, Washington Post, Jun 14, 2013

Fresh: Elemental stands out from the perpetual flow of eco-documentaries by at least glancing at some of the personal issues and professional setbacks faced by the activists it portrays. – Walter V. Addiego, Hearst Newspapers, Jun 14, 2013

Beautiful Film

Elemental is a film to watch more than once. Each viewing reveals more and more subtleties that prove a depth and honesty to activism that goes beyond inspiration. I'm not sure how the filmmakers were able to get such an intimate telling of these three lives on camera.

The score of the film carries a tone that links these three portraits together and induces a sensation of unity even as the three lives are very different. Besides that, the score is so well done and the film itself is completely enjoyable and captivating to watch.

This is a new kind of environmental film, one that takes the viewer away from the usual inspirational tropes. What takes their place are true stories told in a fullness that includes uplifting moments along with despair, beauty along with decay.

5 stars for sure.

Highly recommended

A stunningly beautiful and thought provoking film. I highly recommend it!

Memorable film

One of the year's best documentaries. Each story within the film is excellent and I have reflected on the people within the film and wondered how they are doing. There are excellent documentaries out there but this is a true gem. Very glad to see this film on iTunes.
