Plot Summary

One Christmas Eve a long time ago, a baby crawled into Santa's bag of toys... Raised as an elf, Buddy grows into an adult three times larger than the biggest elf--and realizes that he will never truly fit in at the North Pole. This holiday season, Buddy goes looking for his true place in the world--in New York City. Buddy finds his workaholic father…who's on Santa's "naughty" list, a new mother and a 10-year-old brother who doesn't believe in Santa Claus or elves. Here, now, Buddy discovers his destiny…to save Christmas for New York and the world! Starring Golden Globe and Emmy Award-nominee Will Ferrell ("Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," TV's "Saturday Night Live"), Academy Award, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-nominee James Caan ("The Godfather," "Funny Lady"), Golden Globe-winner and Emmy Award-nominee Bob Newhart (TV's "Newhart," "Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde"), Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winner Edward Asner (TV's "Lou Grant," "JFK"), Academy Award and Golden Globe-winner Mary Steenburgen ("The Brave One," "Melvin and Howard") and Zooey Deschanel ("Almost Famous," "Failure to Launch").

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A disarmingly funny holiday comedy. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Dec 5, 2012

Fresh: A movie made by people who really have their thinking caps on. – Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com, Dec 4, 2013

Fresh: Sure, Elf feels a little too feel-good at the end, but what do you expect? It's a Christmas movie! Anything else would be the cinematic equivalent of finding coal in your stocking. – Christy Lemire, Associated Press, Dec 4, 2013

Rotten: The film soon bogs down in fake hugs and a fakier climax involving Santa (Ed Asner) and his downed sled. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Dec 4, 2013

For Your Inner Child

We watch this movie every year on Christmas Eve. I can not think of a better movie to put you in the Christmas spirit. Will Ferrell at his best. I normally prefer dark comedies or movies with an edge, but I can't help loving this film. It's truly magical. Just enjoy it.

Classic

This movie is hilarious. I watch it every year and has become a classic in my house. It's great because all ages can enjoy the movie. I've watched it with people as young as five to 60 years old, all of which loved it too. Will Ferrell is great in this with perfect comedic timing. Even the Elf suit he wears is funny. The story is about a young baby who snuck into Santa's bag full of toys at an orphanage on christmas. When Santa and the elves find out what happened they decided to raise the baby (now named Buddy). The movie follows an older Buddy, (Will Ferrell) as he discovers he is in fact a human and not an Elf. This involves Buddy going to New York to meet his father and along the way he gets into some funny antics and falls for a girl (Zooey Deschanel). All in all this movie probably ties with A Christmas Story with being the funniest Christmas movie to watch.

Amazing

This is the best holiday movie ever made.
