Plot Summary
Based on the original 1995 erotic vampire cult classic that made waves for its controversial scenes, this explosive supernatural thriller comes from the filmmakers behind I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE and TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 3D. Charlotte (Sharon Hinnendael of RITES OF PASSAGE) arrives at college a timid and repressed freshman who is haunted by nightmares from her troubled past. Hoping for a fresh start, she meets a handsome, mysterious suitor. As her nightmares become more intense she discovers her suitor is a vampire with dangerous, ulterior motives and Charlotte is lured into dark world of carnal desires where her future and past are linked forever by an ancient, bloody secret. Costarring Victor Webster (TV’s MELROSE PLACE) and Kaniehtiio Horn (TV’s HEMLOCK GROVE).

An improvement over the original
Let's be honest, this remake is actually a marked improvement over the original film, although that's not exactly a difficult achievement. The strengths of this film are in the performance of the main character, Charlotte, whose story diverges a great deal from the original, inasmuch as it actually gives her a story. Alyssa Milano's original character was a complete void -she was a victimized woman with no sense of agency or personality- but the new Charlotte, played with fragile thoughtfulness by Sharon Hinnendael, feels like something approximating a human being. In the scenes in which she's allowed to act, that is.
However, similar to the original Embrace of the Vampire, there are many gratuitous scenes that stand apart from the script and characters as we know them, as Charlotte is forced into sexual situations that break the logic of her character. This is especially the case in this version, as the character has been so much improved upon, that it makes little sense for her to suddenly lose all self-control.
That said, the scenes of violence, while sometimes suffering from overly flashy editing, are pleasingly and aggressively gory. The cinematography is also very beautiful -another huge improvement over the impoverished-looking original, enhancing the beautiful Canadian locations where filming took place. This has got to be one of the more stylish 'college campuses' depicted on film -which doesn't necessarily detract from the film itself.
Unfortunately, the finale of the film is quite truncated and feels not so much rushed into as abruptly transitioned into. A number of questions are left unanswered -for instance, what happened to her good-natured roommate?
Altogether, I recommend this film, if only because it's a big improvement over the original. It also contains a lot of the 'extra value' that fans of the original will be expecting. The writer and director obviously know what people are expecting from the film, and even though, in my opinion, the gratuitous sex adds nothing to the film, it is obviously the reason most people will be seeing it.
This is a quality production
Not a great vampire movie, but a good one, top 10%. I have no regrets about having watched it, and no hesitation to recommend it.
So bad, it's insulting
This movie is the epitome of what you would call a waste of time. Everything about it was so poorly done, and so horribly executed, you would think you were watching a Syfy movie akin to Sharknado. This is one of those films that is like a train wreck; you know nothing good will come of it, but you just can't help but look.
The single remedying quality about this film is the actor who played the professor/fencing instructor. What a hunk! Other than that, stay as far away from this movie as you possibly can. It's not even worth your consideration.
