Plot Summary

Emily Bronte's timeless tale of love and passion comes alive in this stirring new film version starring Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes. Shot on location in Yorkshire, this is the first screen adaptation to present Bronte's complete story of two generations of the Earnshaw and Linton families, as their lives and fortunes intertwine in a complex web dominated by the passionate relationship between doomed lovers Heathcliff and Cathy. Fiennes gives a dynamic performance as Heathcliff and Juliette Binoche dazzles in the dual roles of Cathy Earnshaw and Catherine Linton in a movie that captures all the power of the classic novel.

Haunting

While fans of the book will likely not like this adaptation, on its own, I found this movie intriguing. Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes create complicated characters that draw in the viewer like watching a train wreck. The highlight of the film is the music which can haunt the viewer for days.

Earlier Version...Much Better

The 1939 version of this movie with Lawrence Olivier and Merle Oberon is sooooo much better!!! I highly recommend that one over this version. Although I'm partial to Ralph Fiennes eyes ( which I love!), I have to say that this movie doesn't do the book justice and even though the Wuthering Heights 1939 version is in black and white, Lawrence Olivier matches Emily Brontes' description of Heathcliff much better. Now, go see that movie! =)

Emily's Work Come To Life

Except for a few minor changes ( down playing Mr. Lockwood's role and adding Emily's narration) this movie really captured the pain and haunted romance of Wuthering Heights. In this version, Heathcliff was portrayed accurately as the villian he was. Although the 1939 film had its merits, it did not follow the book and left out half of the main characters. If you have read the book and love it's tragic passion, you will fall for this movie!
