Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Mr. Jones's performance is the only spark within this otherwise dull, well-mannered exercise. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Mar 7, 2013

Rotten: The effort to put a personal face on the major issue of occupation is as timely as Iraq and Afghanistan, but the execution is clumsy and cliche-ridden. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Mar 7, 2013

Rotten: The subject is intrinsically compelling, yet the central story is padded with an uninvolving love story that functions mostly as obvious symbolism about compassion for the enemy. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Mar 8, 2013

Rotten: Half crinoline romance, half crusty military-history lesson. – Peter Debruge, Variety, Mar 22, 2013

Excellent

Excellent casting in this movie. I enjoyed every minute of this movie, and learned a few things along the way. You can't trust Tomatoes, watch this movie.

A Movie With Learning

This movie's review of a little known piece of the end of WW II in Japan, and one that served a foundational moment for the emergence of Honda, Toyota and Japan in general in the world we know today, should be a mandatory watch in most US schools, as the key components of history just don't get taught anymore like this. Fantastic subject, well acted, and again much better than many attempts in film to portray history.

Fascinating

Actually, this is a pretty fantastic movie that sheds light on a little known moment in history of our country. And the ruins of Tokyo look cool in a post apocalyptic kinda way.
