Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: While the picture loses some plot tension by assuring the viewer that Ender is basically an okay kid, it gains by showing the growth of the boy into his destiny as "the One." – Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine, Nov 19, 2013

Fresh: Straightforward, a bit literal-minded, very faithful to the book and largely compelling. – Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com, Nov 18, 2013

Rotten: It's to the film's credit that it tackles big questions without offering any easy or clear-cut answers. If only Hood's acumen for storytelling and characterization were just as lofty. – Ian Buckwalter, NPR, Nov 15, 2013

Rotten: Hard to comprehend and even harder to endure. – Anthony Lane, New Yorker, Nov 4, 2013

Very poor adaptation

If you are a fan of the source material, then you may very disappointed by this adaptation. It wouldn’t be so bad but they changed the fundamental principle of the book. That and Peter’s role was reduced to a single scene and Valentine’s and Petra’s roles are conflated. My wife and I walked away from this film feeling utterly disappointed.

Vibrant and Heavy

The trailers totally sold this movie wrong. I've read the novel, and I was quite disappointed by the trailers. Hang in there, Ender's Game fans! Rest assured, the important emotional nuances of the book are present and healthy in this adaptation. While it largely skims over relationships between Ender and his friends, it also deals heavily with his relationship to the buggers. I really appreciated the visual effects, they added so much to the story and the world. The only complaints I have are the slightly stilted dialogue and the weird romance angle between Ender and Petra, which I could have done without. All in all, a great movie.

Awesome

The CGI is stunning and the acting is amazing from all around, whether it be the adult actors or the children. A must-see
