Plot Summary

A turning point in 20th century war history is the focus of this fact-based account of the 1942-1943 battle of Stalingrad, in which the Germans were finally defeated by Russian influence — one of the bloodiest battles in World War II history. The film stars Jude Law as Vassili, a marksman from the Urals who is transported to Stalingrad in 1942, and a master German sniper, Major Koenig (Ed Harris). Koenig, an expert German sniper, is determined to eliminate his formidable opponent by any means necessary; meanwhile, Vassili has joined forces with Danilov (Joseph Fiennes), a young Russian political adversary, who is impressed by Vassili's skills and raises his profile in the Soviet Union. Both Vassili and Danilov become involved with Tanya (Rachel Weisz), whose Jewish parents have been captured by the Germans and have forced her to take up with the men on a sniper expedition. Koenig and Vassili begin to develop traps for each other, until fate inevitably must bring the two sharpshooters together. This large-scale production, financed mostly by Teuton companies, also features Bob Hoskins as Nikita Krushchev and Ron Perlman as an aging Russian sniper.

Awesome War Movie!

I just saw this and let me tell you was it awesome. I really didn't think it would really be that good of a movie since it seems WWII movies are always coming out. And I certainly didn't expect it to be as good as Saving Private Ryan but this movie turned out to be almost as good. I really loved the story and characters. The acting was very well and especially Jude Law and Joesph Fiennes. It was kind of slow moving at the beginning of the movie but then it starts to progress. The battle scenes are no match to Steven Speilburg's awesome battles in SPR but the story I think may be better because of its uniqueness and quality. That is where director Jean-Jacques Annaud hit the home run in the story. Plus the sniping action is very cool to watch. I really don't want to keep you reading this because I want to give you time to have this downloaded on your iPod immediatly. I know I will. So buy it right now if you are a war movie fan. You will enjoy it.

Great movie that is not the "true story".

This movie take way too many turns from the real story. Read the book "War of the rats" it will blow your mind. They make Konig look like a heartless animal when in real life he was a kind person who did not enjoy his job. He never tok the life of a child as in the movie. In real life there was no child in the story! It is just a plot device. Hell his real name was Thorvald! Vasillis was actually one of two teams that worked together to fight the Germans. He was the leader of a team full of quiet fast people. They called themselves the rabbits. His friend was leaderof a team that went out at night because they were so loud and slow. They called themselves the bears. The woman in the movie existed but she was a very good sniper who got many people killed on her first mission from a mistake. All that aside it is a good movie if you ignorethe facts and watch it for what it is. A great movie very loosely based on facts.Worth a buy for action fans...not historians
