Plot Summary
ENIGMA is an exciting tale of love, espionage, patriotism and betrayal set during World War II from acclaimed director Michael Apted (Enough), Oscar(r) - winning screenwriter Tom Stoppard (Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen: Shakespeare in Love, 1998) and produced by rock star Mick Jagger and "Saturday Night Live" creator Lorne Michaels. Still reeling from the devastating disappearance of his lover Claire, (Saffron Burrows - Time Code), brilliant code-breaker Tom Jericho, (Dougray Scott - Mission Impossible II), is summoned to Britain's top-secret intelligence campus. There, he faces his toughest assignment - cracking the Nazis' infamous ENIGMA code. With the help of Claire's roommate Hester, (Oscar(r) nominee Kate Winslet - Best Actress in a Leading Role: Titanic, 1997; Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Sense and Sensibility, 1995 and Iris, 2001), and with a ruthless secret agent, (Jeremy Northam - Gosford Park), in hot pursuit, the two must piece together the puzzle that links Claire's disappearance to U-boats closing in on Allied cargo ships and a mass grave in Poland.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: At its frequent best, Enigma slyly evokes the spirit of classic Alfred Hitchcock thrillers.
Fresh: Not enigmatically at all, it pleases and teases us -- in high style.
Fresh: For most of it's 117 minutes, Enigma delivers a powerful story from World War II that's based on real events.
Rotten: Apted and Stoppard have bitten off too much as they attempt to juggle an espionage plot and parallel past/present romances.
Customer Reviews
Enigma tells the human side of actual wartime experiences! GREAT!
Shows the human side of war not often told of those in the undercurrents of war.
Elegantly crafted with an air of intellectual credability
If you are looking for the typical Hollywood blockbuster with loads of special events, unrealistic plot, and leading characters based on looks and current fame ... Then walk away. If you are however, the type of person who enjoys Gosforth Park, Downton Abbey and the kin .... If you like a plot based on truth, leading roles played by actors and actresses that have true talent, and a way above average script .... Get your glass of wine, put your feet up and enjoy a real treat.
well done movie but not a war movie
I was disappointed by the story: I thought it would be about Enigma and how England managed to crack it and keep it a secret from the Germans, even obliging Churchill to sacrifice thousands of Canadians during a pre-landing in Europe.
Moving is not bad, the director is great and acting is good. But it really has nothing to do with the grand story of how Enigma proved critical to winning the war.
