Plot Summary

"A MUST SEE! 'An Inconvenient Truth' for the healthcare debate" (Anthony Kaufman, The Village Voice). Co-directed by Matthew Heineman and Academy Award®-nominee Susan Froemke (Lalee’s Kin: The Legacy of Cotton), Escape Fire looks at a U.S. healthcare system designed to profit on disease not health, reward quantity over quality, and promote high-tech over high-touch. It interweaves dramatic personal stories with the efforts of leaders battling to transform healthcare at the highest levels of medicine, industry, government, and even the U.S. military.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Arranged in a handful of clear, concise chapters, "Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare" turns an unwieldy, Medusa-headed topic into a convincingly humane argument for change. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Oct 4, 2012

Fresh: Like a doctor's carefully structured analysis of a patient's condition, the film breaks down its massive subject into manageable, clear, but not simplified parts. – Robert Koehler, Variety, Jan 26, 2012

Fresh: Cogent, convincing, determinedly non-ideological, "Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare" tells us that everything we think we know about that incendiary topic might be wrong. And it offers us a way out of the morass. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Oct 4, 2012

Rotten: There's no escaping the fact that the sheer profusion of similarly-themed efforts in recent years reduces their individual impact. – Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter, Oct 5, 2012

The most important film you will see this year

As a practicing physician, I live "health care" day to day - as do all of my families in my practice. We all know the system is broken but there have been few cost-effective solutions proposed that would create a healthier America. Escape Fire is a must see - it may be the single most important film in the fight to save healthcare, ever. To the filmmakers, thank you from those of us in the trenches.

An advocate for systems change at every level

This film is an extraordinary accounting of all the facets of American healthcare that are bankrupting our nation, not only financially, but in every aspect of our daily lives. From the healthcare providers who are frustrated and disillusioned with the system to the patients who are equally frustrated but dependent on the system, this film is an intricate study of the problems we face as well as the solutions we need to adopt. Escape Fire is not about us and them. It is about each and every one of us coming together, leaving personal agendas outside the door, rolling up our shirt sleeves, making tough choices, and above all doing what is the right thing to do for every person in this country. Escape Fire shows us that we can, indeed, transform health care and therefore the health of the nation. I defy anyone who does not wish for themselves and their loved ones the opportunity to live vitally, have meaningful relationships, and be a contributing member of family, community and nation. These things are not possible if we cannot experience health and well- being. We have come together before and we can do it again. Escape Fire shows us the issues and it is up to each one of us to say enough! Let's do this!

I recommend this film to everyone! Go see it and tell everyone you know to see it!

Poignant

This film is a must see. What I liked most about it is that it offered viable solutions on how WE can fix OUR broken healthcare system. It's a non-bias look at our healthcare system that transcends a political argument. It clearly states that we are ALL responsible and accountable as patients, doctors, insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies and government. The structure of the film states what the problems are, why they exist and ways in which we can begin to fix them by making lifestyle changes and supporting preventative measures. Great scientific data included in the film. I encourage everyone to watch it - at minimum a few times! Guaranteed to spark exciting conversation.
