Plot Summary
Kurt Russell stars in this high-velocity sci-fi action-thriller from director John Carpenter. In a world ravaged by crime, the entire island of Manhattan has been converted into a prison which houses the world's most brutal inmates, and when the President of the United States crash lands inside, only one man can bring him back: notorious outlaw Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell). But time is short: in 24 hours, an explosive charge planted inside Snake's body will end the mission - and his life - unless he succeeds.

Fresh: It's a toughly told, very tall tale, one of the best escape (and escapist) movies of the season.
Fresh: A solidly satisfying actioner.
Rotten: When the final credits roll, you can be forgiven a vague sense of dissatisfaction, because the creativity that went into formulating the premise was never extended to the script writing stage.
Fresh: The movie proudly wears its affection for crusty Sergio Leone archetypes and countdown-clock suspense sequences; Carpenter was Tarantino long before Tarantino was.

Great movie, I want to own it, no need to rent it. Why is it not for sale? Makes no sense.
