Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: This sincerity, coupled with a documentary-style approach, can feel a little dry, but the script's refusal to go to extremes only raises its plausibility. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Aug 1, 2013

Fresh: The idea that life evolved independently on Europa is perfectly plausible-and that makes what would be a fun and exciting film in any case all the more worth watching. – Michael D. Lemonick, TIME Magazine, Aug 8, 2013

Fresh: "Europa Report" is a Grade A version of a B picture, a streamlined science fiction story that smartly tells a familiar tale without breaking the bank. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Aug 1, 2013

Rotten: Simply put, the care and thoughtfulness that goes into footage-faking has not been applied to the film's script or structure. – Alan Scherstuhl, Village Voice, Jul 30, 2013

Wonder and awe

This is the most satisfying and surprising science fiction film I have seen in many years. It never becomes a stupid horror film, though it is still tense. It is beautiful and intelligent and made me wonder about life within our solar system. It made me wonder about space travel, and how far man may one day venture. It is also a devastatingly emotional and smart movie. I loved it.

Tries to be profound - and fails miserably

Wow, I can't believe all the high ratings. To begin with, the jittery and annoying "found footage" technique is really fatiguing to watch for extended periods of time. The story itself could have been a minor side arc from a decent novel, and the acting was dull causing the characters to be nondescript. The ending was far too predictable and I saw no twist that another reviewer mentioned, There are also a few very basic scientific errors and gaping plot holes that take away from any feeling of reality.

I could see this as a SyFy Channel made for TV movie. Actually it's not quite that bad, but close. A totally forgettable film.

Closer to science than fiction

The lack of big-budget CGI served this film well by returning a sense of mystery to the genre. I felt the touch of the best episodes of the original Outer Limits..something I thought no longer possible in the modern era.
To the cast and crew of Europa Report: Well done. Very well done.
