Plot Summary
40-Year-Old Virgin star Steve Carell reprises his role as preening newscaster Evan Baxter in this heavenly sequel to the 2003 Jim Carrey comedy hit. Shortly after television anchorman-turned-U.S. congressman Evan Baxter (Carell) relocates his family from Buffalo to Northern Virginia, God (Morgan Freeman) reveals to him that a devastating flood is coming and the planet is about to be cleansed once again. Later, when Baxter accepts the responsibility of building a great ark and his rapidly changing physical appearance begins to draw media attention, his skeptical family attempts to discern if his actions are driven by delusion or divine intervention. John Goodman, Wanda Sykes, Jonah Hill, and Molly Shannon co-star in a divine comedy of truly epic proportions.

Rotten: This is PG-rated proselytizing tinged with Al Gore self-righteousness, all with the narrative thrust of a film about the apocalypse starring Kirk Cameron.

This is a Surprise "Comedy of Biblical Proportions"
I went into the theatre thinking "this is gonna stink compared to Bruce Almighty". I was wrong. This might actually even be better than the first Almighty movie! I was laughing my head off. A couple months later, it came out on DVD, and because I loved it so much, I bought it. The point is, I laughed just looking at the box remembering how great the movie was. Perfect for a Ipod movie; you don't need a big screen, surround sound, and you don't need to see it more than once for the full effect. If you're looking for a funny good time, buy this film.
Divinely Inspired? Naw!
I know that people will mar this review for eternity as being unhelpful merely because my view on this film does not coincide with thier's. Please bear in mind the meaning of "useful" when reading this review. Evan Almighty is one of those movies where only the actor's performance could save the film. Although Steve Carrel squeezed out every humorous face imaginable, I still wasn't satisfied. Sure EVAN ALMIGHTY has its moments, but most of the comedy is comprised of the title character hitting himself with heavy equipment, getting pooped on by every conceivable type of bird, having every type of animal follow him, and in general being miserable. The logic of the entire story doesn't stand a chance either (why all the animals?). CONTENT: Some crude, mild sexual, and crotch trauma humor, mild language, mild biblical complications. WHO: Middle aged kids and older.
Lame
The humor in the movie tries to be slapstick, but it just comes across as lame. For example, in one part, the main character trips over a beam he's using to make the Ark and then the director beats you over the head with 10 to 15 more "trip and fall" snippets in rapid succession. While not every sight gag is beaten quite so mercilessly, none of them manage to inspire more than a precursor to a chuckle. Morgan Freemen and John Goodman give passable performances but it's really not worth watching. Rent something else instead.
